Cases with separated area for power supply?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Cases with separated area for power supply?

Post by armornone » Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:07 pm

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone knows which cases have separate area for the power supply so it won't pull in heat from other areas of the case?

I think the Antec P183 does this but I was just wondering if maybe there was something less expensive.

Thanks

You can roll a DIY with some cardboard. That's what people here have been/are doing, since before the P18X had it built in. =]

There's also Silverstone with their Raven and Fortress (FT02, not FT01). Instead of separating components by panels, these create divergent airflow paths. The Raven might be cheaper than a P18x.

As long as the case allows the PSU to take in air from the outside of the case there is no use for a separate compartment. A lot of recently designed cases does this today, usually by using a bottom vent.

You mean just cutting a piece of cardboard and using tape or something to separate the CPU and the power supply so the power supply is not pulling in hot air from the CPU?

Can you do that with a power supply like this or is this suppose to have a separate top air vent? Please look at the picture in the link below.

Hi

Yeah, most good cases today that have bottom mounted PSU are designed to draw in fresh air from outside. I dont know why Antec bother with the separate chamber, largely pointless and makes cable management harder.

bottom vents can help muffle the fan noise, but they suck when it comes to checking the dust filters in front of the fans... you have to lift the case up off of the floor.

i'll take the antec seperate compartment, with the easily accessed dust filter in front, thank you.

I'd solve this by using a fanless power supply. As long as there is some amount of airflow on it, it'll be fine. And without fans it won't pull in hot air :)

Not entirely.

In the case of (heeh) the R3, the filter can be slid out from behind. 8)

certainly an improvement, but what if the case is under a desk, or against a wall?

Yes, I did it in my SOLO.

I also cut a hole in my 300's floor and flipped the PSU so its sucking air inward. I don't see why Antec couldn't do that in the first place.

Then your point reigns supreme.
