Gaming Case

Post by yan9 » Sat May 23, 2020 11:03 am

Hi my grandson would like to build a new gaming pc as his existing pc with i7700 3.6hz CPU and GTX 1070 GPU is not good enough when in a competitive tournament at endgame in Fortnite, his fps go down from 180 to about 10.
He is thinking of an i9900k cpu and 2080ti gpu with both of them water cooled and would like some help with parts but I have been out of touch now for a few years and not built anything this powerfull or water cooled.
I would first like some help with choosing a case for this and also do not know what size or amount of rads required for both cpu and gpu, thanks for any help that can be given,

Good overall case is the Fractal Define R6 or Meshify S2, either will allow you to mount rads on the front and back, but might be too laid back for your grandson.

I would recommend to take a look into Lian Li PC-O11DW, you can go with AIO or go full custom water loop with rads on top side, bottom or front. Here some examples of what can be done with the case,

Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL 2080Ti SLI Mega RGB Build
LIAN LI O11 XL Red & White ROG Monster! Timelapse Build
O11 Dynamic PCMR Edition!!! RetroWave Chrome Build

Thank you very much for your reply which will give me a good start, I will look through all of your suggestions and hopefully my grandson can make a decision.
I built a pc about 4 years ago with a Lian li case with help on this forum from yourself and others and have been very happy with it thanks.
When the case has been decided on I am sure i will be back with more question especially on the water cooling subject.

Have you looked to see what in the current build is crippling his game play? What resolution (1080p, 1440p, 2160p?) and quality level (Epic, high?) is he using? Looking at game benchmarks for Chapter 2 shows the GTX 1070 with a 29fps 1% low at Epic level and 4k resolution.

His CPU isn't the limiter. He could have an i3 in there and it wouldn't affect fps to this level.

What's the system RAM and storage?

Also, DX12 was made available for the game last year...See if that's enabled. It should even out fps a bit.

One more thought....if he runs task manager/performance tab in the background while playing, you can get a feel for what may be bogging down game play.

Hi Steve thanks for you advice and help my grandson is running the game at 1080p and having to run on low level, system ram is hyper X DDR4 2x8gb at 2.4mhz.
windows 10 and the game are on a WD Black WDS256G1XOC 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD.
He has been running task manager today and sent me some readings to show you as follows-
Game play while standing stationary
Task Manager readings
DX 11
Low settings CPU 50% GPU 70% FPS 200 to 100 Fluctuating
Medium settings CPU 60% GPU 80% FPS 160 to 100
High settings CPU 82% GPU 97% FPS 180 to 100
Epic settings CPU 90% GPU 99% FPS 100 to 60

DX12
Low settings CPU 50% GPU 2% FPS 200 to 100
Medium settings CPU 60% GPU 2% FPS 100 to 60
High settings CPU 65% GPU 2% FPS 100 to 60
Epic settings CPU 70% GPU 2% FPS 90 to 40

At tournament level and once in to game play at end game when massive builds are taking place then FPS drops to as low as 2 FPS and fluctuates.

Was the bogging down with DX11, DX12, or both? Because it looks like DX12 solves the CPU loading issue (although the 2% GPU number across the board looks suspect). 16GB of RAM and PCIe NVMe SSD are fine.

Hi Steve yes I can understand what you are saying and I can’t understand the 2% only on GPU in DX 12.

Hopefully I can get some guidance somewhere as to what we need to try next as it does not seem to be running correctly and certainly not if the components are usually man enough for that game.

My Grandson tells me that most of the pros are running a i9 9900 cpu and 2080Ti gpu and wanting his dad to put his hand in his pockets.

He left out the part where the pro's are sponsored and don't pay for their rigs. :)

You might ask him to run task manager while he's playing and capture the values at endgame rather than at idle.

Hi Steve I will get my grandson to do what you have suggested, it might not be for a while as I have just ended up in hospital with 4 broken ribs from a fall onto a concrete floor from a loft space.
I will be back in contact as soon as I am up to it.

Hi Christiano,
Thanks for your input on the case.
As you may have read I had a very bad fall especially for someone in there mid 70s. I am doing pretty good but already had metalwork in my back from another major opp which has been upset from my fall.
Anyway all is going reasoably well but the pc upgrade has been postponed for a future time but thanks to all for your replies to my post.
