EOC overtake in 7 days, but can we hold off Team MacOSX?

Post by haysdb » Tue Mar 30, 2004 3:40 am

According to Extreme overclocking we will overtake EOC in 7 days, and Team MacOSX is not even listed as a threat, but I believe this will change.

Check out this article at www.apple.com. I believe this is what NoahJ has been referring to as "Phase B". For sure, this excellent publicity will help Team MacOSX and the other Mac teams recruiting efforts.

If we are to match pace with them, we need more members and more cpus.

Johnson is the point man for the Mac OS X team, which is comprised of about 1,000 volunteers, all running Mac OS X.
Well, someone's telling a lie when the Mac guys come here and say that points per pound PCs are better and that they have plently of PCs folding for them!

And I presume that some of Noah's points come from his Windows shop - that is when they're not broken!!

lol, you guys will pass eoc before us, i'm sure of that. with the extra boost you got from ARM there's no way we'll catch up to you in time.

however, the real prize will be who can kick the knights down a peg first. :D

at least it will be now that we can't catch you before EOC. he he.

Hey, we never said we don't run PC's too, jsut that we run Mac OS X for folding on the Mac. That has to be the case as on the mac you can only fold under OS X.

Also, I believe that we said points per price PC's are better. The G5 will give any PC a run for its money...

well, per price you have to be willing to build your own machine. you can really make great folding to cost ratios when you build the caseless PSU/MB/ style setups, but those aren't really computers.

for retail bang for the buck, i'm guessing the dual G5 is top notch. although ask again in a few months. the 3.0's will be wicked.

What's a single-CPU G5 cost anyway, and what Intel CPU does it compare most closely to? In fact, for that matter, what's a dual cost? I'm just curious, I haven't bought a pre-built computer in probably 4 years, so I'm used to juse looking at component prices, and I've never priced out anything that wasn't Windows or *nix based.

hmm, good question. not sure they ever actually gave out exact numbers for the G5's, but i know they were supposed to be cheaper than the G4's.

motorolla however, had a bad habit of only selling chips in batches of 10,000.

the top notch g4's were sold for the mid $400's, the g5's are cheaper, but i have no idea at what price.

as for how they stack up, it all depends on who you ask. lot of folks say they compare well to the 3.4Ghz P4's. no idea what those sell for now.

i used to build my own machines, i know i could build them for a hell of a lot cheaper than i could buy them for though. of course, i also only used athlon chips back then too, since bang for the buck they were the best option.

Here is a comparison of a Dual G5 Mac and a dual 2.0GHz Opteron system.

It is interesting to note that the G5 was less expensive than the dual Opteron. That's a major surprise.

We are now 8 days behind EOC (we were 7), and Team MacOSX is back on our threats list (they weren't yesterday), just 30 days out.

The good news is, we put up 29,674 points yesterday. The bad news is, Team MacOSX put up 31,217. Take a look at their new members in the past 7 days - a cool FIFTY new members to our 14. I don't know if this is the result of NoahJ's article on www.apple.com, or if it's from other recruiting efforts. Either way, they now outnumber us 364 active folders to 151. We only need half as many members as they do, on average, but at the moment they hold almost a 5:2 advantage.

Okay, for you Americans who have never heard of the currency I use, think of it as points per dollar :!:

Over here a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 costs £2,299.01. Anazing how they are bothered about that penny! (A penny is 1/100 of a pound - equivalent to a cent, but worth 1.8 times as much). A dual Opteron should run around £1500...

I am guilty of getting discouraged by Team MacOSX huge influx of new blood, but all these new bodies have yet to produce a great number of points. Yes, their new members are having an impact, but it's considerably less than I had feared. Obviously these new members are not all packing dual G5's and racks of XServ's. If these are mostly pre-G4 Macs, then their impact could actually be pretty small. I also predict a significant attrition rate as these new folders struggle to produce points.

Don't get me wrong, I wish Team MacOSX well, and hope their new members make a huge impact, I'm just making some observations and educated guesses about how their team's production will actually be impacted, and whether any increases are likely to be permanent or short lived.

I will have more to say tomorrow.

A dual Opteron should run around £1500...

Where??

seriously i'd be interested if a Vendor could supply me with one for as little as that.

I looked into getting an Oppie for my photo business and the cheapest quote I got was from firm called Armari (I think) and they wanted just shy of £5000.
This was last September maybe prices have come down!
NB
ONLY from vendors No self builds, and the firm has to be in the UK as back to base warranties will be required!

"Seems like EOC has picked up the pace more than the OSX bunch".

Where is you info from? EOC put in average 25K ppd OSX are at almost 30kppd

The overtake time for EOC with respect to OSX has dropped to 7 days (from 9) in 24 hrs

With the momentum OSX have I think they'll overtake SPCR in 6 days and Eoc a little while after.

OSX has also added 50 new members in 48 hrs EOC has added just 7
