Problems with 64-bit Linux?

I installed the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. With the 64-bit version I had all sorts of problems (drivers as well as application)

should i be prepared for a nightmare installation?

That was me. My experiences with 64-bit Edgy was that some driver support (sound and video) was not great and that application support (Flash, Adobe Acrobat, etc.) was either non-existant or so much of a PITA to be effectively non-existant. While I'm primarily a Windows user (I work for MS), I've used/worked with enough OSes over the years (pre-Linux Mac, NeXT, VAX/VMS, Solaris, NetWare) to be a pretty good judge of usability. I actually like Ubuntu, just not in its 64-bit guise.

On the other hand, if you are simply using this for Folding, then you won't care about Flash, Acrobat or sound drivers.

True, this will be a dedicated F@H box, but it'd still be nice to have sound etc.

Anyway, thanks for taking a weight off my mind, a problematic install is the last thing I need at the moment!

I used 64bit Ubuntu since dapper.No problems with 7.04 that cant be solved (flash and java...you just install 32bit Firefox)...and about Adobe Reader...there are alternatives witch should be used instead the original...why?Because they are faster and just as good for reading *.pdf files.If you need to make PDF files...im sure there are ways

Hello,

The only issue I had is the lack of 64bit Flash -- installing the 32bit FireFox works fine. I just updated to 7.04, and it did not reinstall this, so I'll have to redo it, if i miss the Flash, I guess.

Oh, and you cannot run Skype in 64bit Ubuntu...

No probs so far on Opensuse 10.2 x64. (Mr. Murphy, please note the 'so far'...)

Only PITA is nvidia driver install... it's not difficult, just has to be done... following the destructions at opensuse.org. (It's an nvidia liscence issue for all (?) linux flavours)

I've found the most difficult thing with Linux(suse) is exactly how to interrogate google to get the answer you want quickly.
