Have you tried wine?
I recently found a thread on foldingforum which shows you can run the Windows SMP client with -bigadv under wine. I have been running the Windows SMP with wine 1.2 and 1.3.1 in Mandriva 2010.1 (32 bit) for just over a week, and it is very stable. Others are using this client with freeBSD and openSuse.
My C2D E6750 isn't man enough to run bigadv - the forum suggests you need a quad core processor; but I am accelerating towards 1800 ppd, depending on the amount of other work I put through the system.

Hey, now there's a thought, I hadn't even thought of that, but since I'm already using wine for the gpu jobs, it just makes sense to give it a try, first thing I'll when I get back home tonight. Thanks, that's a great tip!
As far as using a c2d goes, there's not a chance that will work for bigadv, it has a hard requirement for 8 cpus. The i7 processors only work because of the multithreading they have that makes them look like 8 cpus. That was the big problem with bigadvs leaving linux, I had my most powerful cpus running linux so that I could run bigadv on them, and then they switched it to windows. But that wine tip, that seems plausible, I'll definitely have to give it a shot. Thanks again!

25k ppd with my setup? ... yeah something is definately wrong.
I was on vacation all last week, and I just left the SMP running. I turned off the gpu core because I didnt want the excess heat when I wasnt around to monitor things.
Looking at my history in EOC, I was getting a consistant 1k all of last week while I was out. Now I did have 1 other process running alongside. but its a single threaded app, so at worst case, it would only use 1 of the 12 cores available.
Folding is run while I sleep and while im at work, so its about 16-18hrs a day during the week and less on weekends. Im not sure if its running the -bigadv and/or advmethods or not -- time to re-check the settings.
I suspect there might be some power settings in win7 I need to fix. it shuts off the monitor as expected, but it may also be throttling down the cpu when im away.
Next I need a way to get the gpu client to run with a GTX210 card, and I will be able to have my 2nd box running when the weather cools down.

Dont forget the passkey!
One thing I forgot to mention, but you may already know, Cordis, is that you have to take a passkey. When I was previously folding, up to late 2008 when I left ADSL-land, this was given out as being unnecessary; but you won't get your bonuses unless you have a passkey.

passkey
Yes, I've known about the passkey for a while, so I'm all set up there. Kittle, be sure you have one too, if you're not getting bonuses that might explain part of the problem you're having. If it's not that, you may also check to see if you have a screen saver on, I've noticed certain screen savers seem to suck up an inordinate amount of cpu, turned them all off on my machines. Something else to watch out for, I've noticed that browsers left open can grab cycles. Not really sure why, but it's good to shut them down if you're done with the machine for a while. Otherwise, you should be good to go. Oh, and you may want to download hfm.net (http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/) to monitor your runs, if you can tell us what it says about your runs it might be easier for us to figure out what's up. Don't give up, if you can get this system up to where it should be, you should jump up to #3 or #4 in production! Exciting!
SMP on 64-bit UNIX?
Now that the summer is on the way out - the noon temperature here in Northern Italy is a mere 26c - , I am thinking about setting my wife's computer to folding as well. At night, we need the heat! When we lived in Amsterdam, this E2160 used to be worth ~1200 ppd. But something cordis said in this thread about SMP being windows only makes me wonder: should we plough on with the "old" 64-bit cllient, or install the same 32-bit software as I use on my own system.
Is anyone still using the 64-bit client? Has anyone evaluated the merits of 64 bit versus 32?
Thanks in advance
Mike

not clear
Sorry, I may not have been clear, it's only bigadv smp folding that's only supported in windows now, regular smp can still be done on both platforms. So by all means, fire that system up!
And I did manage to get bigadv running with wine on my i7 980x linux box, thanks again for the tip kittle!!! I had to use -smp 11, when it was using all 12 cores my gpu jobs dropped down to nothing. But with that setting, I'm now getting 13179 ppd from the gtx 295 and an amazing 40094 ppd from the bigadv smp job!!! You should be seeing some dips and spikes in my ppd again.

well I changed my folding bat file to use -advmethods. there was no visible increase in the time between percentage points, but the EOC site shows a record 8500 points for yesterday.
Im gonna have to try the "-smp 11" option - this should give the GPU core and other processes enough cpu cycles so they dont starve.
No screen saver here -- but I definately have to look into getting a passkey.

passkey!
Here's a link to the passkey faq: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-passkey
Be sure to get one ASAP if you don't have one, check your client.cfg file to see if you do have one. And if not, hit that link and get one, it'll be more than worth it. Of course, you'll have to wait to finish 10 WUs before you start getting bonuses, but once you do, it'll be epic!

ok im setup with a passkey now.
And I found the issue with the smp client - it was set to run at 'idle' priority instead of low -- thats now fixed.
I also fired up my older Opteron box and set it running. According to the Hfm monitor its getting just over 3kppd. Nothing to sniff at there.
So both smp clients are now running with -advmethods, and I can see a definite Jump in the PPD. Assuming no more heatwaves I can probably keep both boxes running all week fora nice pile of points.

Re: 2,000,000 point club
Thanks guys !! That Quad core is really making a huge difference. The swap from the E7200 @3.2GHz to the Q9550 @3.4GHz doubled my ppd (no difference in temps and no difference in noise).
Also, I'm really eyeing those GTS 450 Will wait until black friday to see how the pricing goes. It would really improve the efficency of my rig if I could get one of those.

Re: 2,000,000 point club
Yeah, more cores = more points! I'm waiting for black friday sales to see if I can get a discount on another i7 980x. If I double up on another one, and have dual 460s in each, I may be able to cut my machine count down to 2 from the 3 I have running constantly now. May need a new case for one of the machines, maybe a new motherboard so I can space out the gpus enough. Ah well, things get complicated. But keep on folding!
Re: 2,000,000 point club
Black Friday discounts? I wish
Over here an i7 980 will set you back $1250 easily. It' s only a dream for us poor Europeans!
