Easy way to lower CPU temperature by 5 degrees

Post by Matija » Sat Jul 14, 2007 5:34 am

1) Open the case
2) Remove an unbelievably large amount of cat hair from the CPU heatsink
3) Close the case
4) CPU temperature drops 5 degrees Celsius

Holy crap! How did THAT much hair get in?!

Now you see why dust filters are important to begin with

The fun part is that I *do* have a dust filter on the intake...

Well...obviously your filter setup is not working properly. I guess it's time to take the next step.

It doesn't have to be super complicated.....cat hairs can be trapped easily compared to fine dust.

Heh, I know the feeling. My cat loves to use the side fans on my Chieftec Dragons to trim his whiskers for some reason. No more side intake fans for me :)

My cats just love to stand in front of my PC. Not sure if they do it on purpose (I always "give them attention" when they do this), maybe they like the little breeze just in front of the PC of air getting sucked in.

Hah! My wife asked me to look at her mom's computer since they couldn't figure out why it would POST, but nothing else. She had 5 cats at the time and it was sitting on the carpeted floor. So I took it home, plugged it in and then noticed an odd smell coming from it. I opened it up to find it caked in cat hair and the lovely smell of feline urine. I got gloves, removed the hard drive and copied over the data to a spare system. Fun. Fun.

Then you should consider positive pressured comp. box where the main intake is heavilly filtered and rest of box sould be as sealed as possible. It has been done many times here so just do some search on the forum.

Well, I guess I won't be having that problem anymore since my cat has disappeared :(

That sucks. If my cat got gone I would flop in bed all day and cry like a baby girl.

I let her out when I came home from work on Friday... She tried coming back that evening, but my parents' cat has kittens, and they've "occupied" the usual passageway hole in the fence. This has happened already, but she always did manage to get back home later. Not this time... There's still a tiny chance that she'll somehow manage to get back, but it's not very likely. It's been two full days now, so I presume she's gone forever. There's a lot of ways a cat can get hurt in a city.

Ah, damn, third cat gone missing in less than two years.

Sorry about the cat, really hopes she finds her way back.

Cat hair is a big reason why I have my machines positive pressure with filtered inlets. Interestingly enough the insides of my computers are probably most dust-free places I have in my apartment!

The cat is back after eleven (11) days! :D

The idea of a CPU heatsink clogged with cat hair has never been more beautiful!

:D got to love those cats.

I did a silencing project where I fully exposed the fans at the back of the PC.
The next day my cat noticed and couldn't stop 'investigating' the fans :?

some wire fingerguards fixed that :D

I KNEW IT!

I didnt want to say it, but I did. cat was pissed off. took a hike. kittens = pissed off cat. lucky thecat didnt like try and hide the kittens in a garbage can.

so glad it turned out well :) i love kitties.

yes, a huge paper type filter is a fantastic idea. and yes, positive pressure is best for any computer setup. more in than out makes for a happier psu and consistent internal temperatures.

She came home clean, and looks healthy. I have absolutely no idea where she could have been, and especially not how she survived for eleven days possibly without water, and on +35 in the shade (nasty heatwave). It's like a miracle...

I didn't have much sleep since she was gone - I used to wake up multiple times during the night because I thought I heard meowing on the door... And today I didn't have much sleep either, because I was constantly waking up to check if she's still here. :)

I'm thinking of taking her to the vet for an exam today, just in case. Apart from a few scratches on her head, she looks healthy, but maybe there's something I've missed...

Oh please do. sometimes they eat food from the trash and can pick up odd things. I would do a vet check up and explain how long it was. better safe than sorry, cliché but true in kitty cases.

I never owned a cat on account of allergies. I cannot imagine how upset I would be seeing it missing :(

My brother gave me his Geforce 4600 when it was still one of the best cards you could get. It wasn't working, and he told me I was welcome to keep it and try to fix it. The problem? The 40mm fan was CLOGGED with cat hair to the point it couldn't move. Heat with a crappy, non-passively designed cooling system=dead card. MSI, being a bunch of bastards, refused to honor their LIFETIME GUARANTEE without a receipt. It... shouldn't matter. It's the lifetime of the product. Western Digital, on the otherhand, is an example of a class act - my Raptor died due to some corrosion, I put in the serial number, and I was good to go for my RMA. They based it on manufacturing date, and that's only with a FIVE year warranty. Companies that screw you over with a lifetime warranty aren't going to get my business. Jerks.

I used to have cats but not anymore. But occasionally get strays meowing outside, so I feed them, and then they disappear. The last time it was a "stray" with a bell string collar, I fed her, kept her the night and let her go again the next day, never saw her again, guess her owner was happy to get the cat back well fed and rested!

Don't mess with cats!

..and could you resist this anyway? :)

... but its usually considered smart to actually clean the area around your computers from time to time, and clean the inside aswell, especially removing dust from heatsinks, fans and hdd's...
