Bluefront (almost) gets DSL ......
Three cheers......after all these years struggling with dial-up. I tried so many times I lost count....too far away they said.
Well I tried a new approach. It was an inside job, pulled off by a friend of mine whose neighbor was a "big-wig" in the phone company. After a mere two days I got a phone call from ATT......the girl said something about a "loop-back" which she could not explain. And that even though, through normal channels DSL was still not available in my area, with this technique I could order it. I'll be up and running by Saturday.....fingers crossed.

Heh.....My Sony Mavica has a great lens, but uses a floppy. Don't expect any hi-res pictures from that camera.
As much difficulty as I had getting DSL, you't think I lived way out in the country......I don't. I live on the southern edge of a big city, in a 100% residential area, with thousands of potential customers. I think the main problem was that this area was built in the 50's. All the phone lines were in place back then, with few changes since. There is a 15,000 foot limit on the distance to the switching station, and I am slightly past that limit.
Sad I had to pull strings to get DSL......some of my neighbors will be pissed.

Hows the cellular service in your area, there is always the possibility that someone now offers wireless broadband access. Yes EV-DO is not as fast or quiet as reliable as a T1 line but its allot better then dialup.
Note they will probably tell you you can only hook it up one computer with there USB based express card adapter, but fortunately there are now 3G Mobile Router's available.

Here's the deal.....a cable broadband would cost me about $100 a month, verses $20 for DSL, and $9 for Dial-up. A satellite broadband would run about the same as cable. I have been unable to find a wireless broadband in the area.
No way I'm spending $100 a month for broadband. I'll deal with the dial-up for now.
