FreeRice.com -Please do this, and help feed the hungry!

Post by jaganath » Sat Nov 10, 2007 10:45 am

Hi, came across this website today, basically it's a game where you guess the meanings of words, and for every right answer the charity behind it gives 10 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program, it's only been up a month and they've already donated 1 billions grains of rice, no idea how much that is in kilos but it sounds like a lot!

it's a fun game (for me anyway  ) and by playing you can help to eliminate world hunger, so it's a win-win-win situation as far as I'm concerned. if people want to throw a bit of competition in there, let's see who can get to the highest vocab level (me: 50  )

470 grains. I was on level 39 or 40 for a while, but in the end dropped down to 32 or so. Not bad for a non-native speaker, but then I've read a lot of English, and many words can be traced back to Latin or Greek, and with a little luck I can guess those.

I think I can make rice much faster by working and donating than playing this came though.

This was harder than I expected; 1000 grains of rice, but I only managed to get to level 25.

Since it's not a registered non profit group there is some question about the finances...

There are many similar initiatives. I'm sceptical about the legitimacy of most of them, and of their effectiveness/efficiency in genuine cases. I prefer auditable established charities.
