New Comps and 12GB of RAM?

Post by Trip » Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:24 am

Browsing newegg today looking at all the gadgets I shouldn't buy, I was surprised to see people speaking of their "12GB of RAM" systems. And the latest performance mobos accept up to 24GB.

Isn't this overkill? I'm sure there are uses for it, but the hype seems like such a waste for most users...

I guess if you are a professional:
- videographer
- photographer
- illustrator
- animation renderer

or someone that runs memory intensive simulations,

it's useful :D

If you are just a dude looking at youtube videos and gaming, nope.

And of course you have to be running a 64 bit operating system and using software designed to take advantage of it.

If you can afford a Photoshop license I'm sure spending a few hundred dollars on more money isn't much of an issue...

12GB of RAM is about 200eur and probably the same in $, not a big deal? At least you are pretty much guaranteed the system is and stays responsive now and later, no matter how much you multitask.

However 24GB becomes seriously expensive, as it needs to be done with 4GB memories, and those are still very expensive.

It used to be so, that computers almost always had too little RAM to be responsive (think relatives and such). Trying to use the computers was mostly listening to the hard drive swapping away. Better this way.

$200 sound about right for 12GB of DDR3 for low end stuff. You'll have to pay a little more for better sticks, but it shouldn't cost more than $300.

Good thing prices have come down so much, I remember seeing announcements of well above $1K. Crazy.

As for who needs this stuff, some people do. I'm using just a hair under 4GB right now out of my 8. If I'll start another virtual machine or start working with my photos, that will add another GB. For now 8GB is fine for me, although 12GB would make me feel safer. When I'll be upgrading my PC, which hopefully I won't have to do for another year or two, I'll be sure to pick up at least 12GB.

Compared to the 700€ of Photoshop CS4 it's not that much...
