Internet filtering / censorship::Australia

For info, news article at Australian Broadcasting Corporation, with a l-o-n-g list of readers' comments.

Google does not like the idea.

AU government mantra to justify is, "protect children from pornography and paedophiles".

Whilst children should be protected, opponents say, " that the Bill will include web sites that have, "illegal activities", and that these are not defined in any way, so could blanket any activity that a government declares to be, "illegal".

Other commentators list Australia along with other internet censoring nations; China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran.

Early 2010 is shaping up as being lively, wrt this topic.

There is a quote I am a fan of and hope it will remain true forever: "The internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it."
