LCD noise is a common problem that quite a few people here care about.
Almost all LCDs made nowadays have internal inverters and power supplies.
One make doesn't however, the Apple Cinema display.
You can see the insides here:

The electronics in the display are quite minimal.
I have been using the 20" one for a few days. (M9177LL/A)
For me the screen is audible from 10". The power brick is audible from about 20". So in practice it is silent. This compares to my previous LCD which was made a hiss audible from several metres away. It certainly wasn't faulty: there was no buzz and the noise was not at a level that most people would notice let alone bother about.
On top of this, the Apple monitor looks very good and is a decent screen.
I recommend it as an LCD that is pretty much guaranteed to be silent on account of its exernal power.
Apple Cinema LCD display - guaranteed silence

apply cinema displays are among the top 1% best displays. I read shitty sites like toms hardware and other places that tried to point out faults in them and yet they recommended things like Benq. in reality, there are very few if any that best them.
they just are a bit pricey for their size. my 26" planar is sick sweet and was only 1000 dollars (little cheaper now). IPS monitor, etc etc. no noise from it so far.
