AMD New Radeon 5870, 5850

Did anyone mention mounting holes?
Will an Accelero S1 fit?
My gfx card died just as the S1 was being posted to me!! So I need a new gfx card that will work with the AC S1.
Oh and in case anyone missed it, word is that the VRMs are silent!! Would be good to get the official SPCR seal of approval, but still.

I also found a similar post on bit tech but can't find it now. So I'm very sure S1 will fit with no problems. At least on 5870. I doubt 5850 will be different but still would be great if anyone can confirm for sure.

So the Accelero S1 will fit a 5870? I have the old version (rev. 1), currently mounted on a 8800GT. I know Accelero S1 rev 1 fit the 3870, does the 48xx and 47xx series (and then also the 5870) use the same mounting holes?
Id like to upgrade to a 5850 or maybe a 5770 (will hopefully be released in october), but I can't settle with a standard cooler now when Im used to my S1 + 120mm nexus (7v).

The 5850 is reviewed:

Not that much more power than a 4850, which an accelero S1 can cool very easily. Very good performance/watt, within realms of a quiet not too power hungry pc!

Re: AMD New Radeon 5870, 5850
The story gets even better for the 5850 today with anandtech reporting the TDP is only 151 watts now. Sure enough, based on their review it delivers more performance than the GTX285 while drawing significantly less power and maintaining that incredibly low idle draw.alecmg wrote:HD 5850

Expected power consumption 170W load and 27 W idle
The chip is one hell of a beast, expected to be 60% faster on average than 4870, sometimes up to 100%
5850 has part of SP turned off to sell faulty chips
Xbit measures power going to the card only. They don't measure extra power consumed by the rest of the system to have the card there. This is on top of the other sites measuring at the wall not the DC power. All those VRM inefficiencies multiply too.closersource wrote:Is it just me or are the XBIT-Lab idle power consumption numbers once again abnormally low just like in its 4770 review? Could this be due to sample variance as GDDR5 is only in its second generation?
But I can take it in context in comparison to my aging 8800gts.rpsgc wrote: You can't really take that 160W figure seriously. No game will ever stress a card that much.
I guess I'm not willing to increase my load power footprint more than what I'm burning now. So, I'll wait for the sweet spot of idle power/load power/price/performance. I think the 57xx will get there....besides, I'm not hurting for fps at the moment (mainly WoW at 1680x1050) or need DirectX 10 or 11...yet.

I'm very happy that ATI (unlike nVidia with the new GT300 parts) will be making a smaller chip on a smaller process. My WAG is that the GT300 will run hot.
Anyway, this release is great, especially to see the idle power consumption. Anandtech's testing on a high end i7 920 setup is still drawing about 315W at load. That's not bad at all for that level of performance...
I'm looking for something with low idle power consumption, and I don't honestly need this level of performance, so I'll wait till November for the "Juniper" cards - which they'll probably call the 56xx series. Based on these charts: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643&p=3, it looks like Juniper is targeted at a 110W TDP and <$200. Fewer SIMDs, but how much do you want to bet that it outperforms nearly all the <$300 current gen cards, and does it in a lower power envelope? Give me that and a super quiet cooling solution, and I'm happy...

Yeah at first I was also very disappointed with the GT300. But if you read later on in the Anandtech article, the actual physical die size is a little smaller than the GT200 because of the smaller process, so it's not as bad as I first imagined. Still is a monster chip with monster transistor count though.RDaneel wrote:I'm very happy that ATI (unlike nVidia with the new GT300 parts) will be making a smaller chip on a smaller process. Nvidia has 40nm parts due out soon. November I think. They should be competitive in the mid range space but we will have to see.RDaneel wrote:I'm very happy that ATI (unlike nVidia with the new GT300 parts) will be making a smaller chip on a smaller process.
GT300 is due in December. Knowing Nvidia, it will be aimed at the "most powerful GPU in the world" spot.
BTW, I thought Juniper was due on the 10th of October. Is it November now?
Meanwhile Hexus measured a difference of 25-watts under loadDAve_M wrote:Anandtech is the best tech site out there but their power consumption numbers are always way off. They say 5850 uses 86W less power than 5870 under load. I really doubt that. That would be about 1/2 of a 5870. We will have to wait for xbitlabs to measure the 5850 before we can compare power usage.
Got my XFX 5870 installed and running. And I'm happy to report its pretty quiet. Its just as quiet as a stock GTX285. Its not super quiet but its quiet enough. It also doesn't rev up when you turn your computer on, its silent from the get go. It also idles nicely about 42-44 and about 65-70 load. This is at the default fan speed of 22%
Some info about midrange 5750
google translate
one 6-pin power connector, 1150 (4600) gddr5, 1120 stream processors.
sounds bandwidth limited
small pcb rocks, definitelly getting one when it comes out
Edit: cooler mounting holes seem to be close to PciE bracket like on 4770. My Accelero S1 could lose its job
