I take it that Youtube review video does not count but the Gainward GTX 1080 is quite impressive:

(Watch from 6:30)
68 Celsius at 1050 rpm is something unprecedented for the likes of GTX 1080.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
The EVGA ACX 3.0 card should be able to match the fan rpms but probably not the temps. It might be worth noting that Gainward/Palit do not market their products in North America.ggumdol wrote:68 Celsius at 1050 rpm is something unprecedented for the likes of GTX 1080.

But still worthwhile as they make some decent products and a large percentage of forum members are outside of US.lodestar wrote:It might be worth noting that Gainward/Palit do not market their products in North America.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
availability of gainward in australia is really good. housemate runs his htc vive setup off a gainward 980ti and its nice and quiet. funny thing i find about gainward is that first time i read the brand on the side of his 980 box the font made me think it was "gainwaro" and i called them that for months
edit: just watched the video and realised it's a guy in australia and he spruiks the same 980ti i'm talking about.. i think they look funky too, pink and gold and stuff. looks like the power consumption of the gainward 1080 is good too.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
I like the sound of the Gainward/Palit/Zotac cooling but I want to run two 1080s in SLI.
My motherboard has a 3-slot SLI gap - so if these cards are 3 slots high, would the top card be able to breathe?
I could go MSI but I haven't really seen this compared against the 3 slot models.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
not well.
Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
Im never doing SLI again, it works great, thats the great thing, but the heat it produce..... its not that easy to keep under control noise wise. Personally i would love to have quiet sli, but its hard, to the point that if i go into again, ill go water, air to me its not worth it, at last from the quiet stand point. Its not that its unberable, you can play fine with it, just that on demanding games its very noticeable, on easy games, you will be fine.mrchrisgreen wrote:I like the sound of the Gainward/Palit/Zotac cooling but I want to run two 1080s in SLI.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
I second. They will not breathe well. There must be at least one whole slot space for air flow. One whole slot is minimum in my experience. I would go for MSI Gaming X (?) for SLI setup in terms of noise/thermal performance.

very interesting card, 1db lower than MSI on load, and same load temp. Sadly not available in the US to even try it.

I tried to spot differences between the Palit and Gainward PCBs and coolers, but they seem to be (almost) identical. Review of the Gainward:

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
The Palit fan blades are a slightly different shape to those on the Gainward. In addition the dual fans on the Palit GTX 1070 and 1080 cards are counter-rotating, which seems to be a first for a graphics card. Palit claim that this is to "...reduce airflow conflicts and effectively improve overall cooling performance...".
Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
Installed an MSI GamingX 1080 yesterday, so I thought I'd give some impressions here:
Performance is satisfying, currently running a curved undervolt for 2000mhz at 1V, although Afterburner seems to weirdly shift the curve around depending on temperature for some reason, which is quite annoying. Hope that'll be fixed in the final release.
Fan noise / default curve is good, haven't really seen a reason to take it off that yet. Noise signature is acceptable but could be better imo. Probably still satisfactory for a quiet/silent build but your mileage may vary.
Got a bit unlucky on the coil whine I think, you can definitely hear it, although I have to clarify here that my PC is on the table next to me. I can't hear it with headphones on, although I have tinnitus so that might cover it a bit as well. Putting my head next to the air vents in the front means I can hear it clearly, my Define R4 is doing a good job keeping the whine on the inside.
I will try using 2 cables to connect the PSU to the GPU and see if that helps the coil whine. If not, I will probably still keep the card since my top PCIE slot seems broken and the other good cards seem to all be triple-slot, which I don't really have if I still want the card to breathe well.
Hopefully future GPU generations will be able to further reduce power consumption so overall coil whine goes down.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
I don't think coil whine is due to power consumption, and above all I don't think future GPU generations may draw less power: as a matter of fact we're bottoming the die scale, no further shrinking are probably possible, so that, more probably that not, next gen will be more power hungry than Pascal (8k is already on the go and expected within next two years).Nexmagic wrote:Hopefully future GPU generations will be able to further reduce power consumption so overall coil whine goes down.

Lodestar,
I'm genuinely impressed by your subtle observation on the fan direction of Palit 1070/1080 cards. They are indeed counter-rotating: the left fan rotate in the counterclockwise direction and the right fan rotates in the clockwise direction. Since my Palit card is "Super Jetstream", I suppose that all versions of Palit 1070/1080 cards have this feature of counter-rotation. Also, I looked at the shape of the fan blades of Palit cards (and mine as well) more carefully, which led me to conclude that they use completely identical fans which are counter-rotating.
Thanks for your observation. I also agree that "counter-rotation" is something very novel and could absolutely reduce airflow conflicts, thus contributing to improved cooling performance. Very intriguing observation.
As for the difference of fans in Palit and Gainward cards, once again, your observation is spot on. If you look at the following Youtube video, they indeed use slightly different fan blades. In fact, Gainwards fans do not counter-rotate from what I can gather from their appearance in the video.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
While im wating on the MSI GTX1080 Gaming X, one card that has recently caught my atention due to the triple slot cooler like the MSI GTX980 Lightning is the Zotac GTX1080 AMP! Edition. Sadly there are no reviews from the usual sites yet, only some youtube videos, but still is impressing, specially the load temps and 2k boost is achieving, i do have my doubts into the vbios fan profile and how noise it is, seems its quiet... but how quiet... its hard to say. I have owned Zotac in the past, it was the quietest GTX480 in the market, well it was noisy still but tons quieter than the any other GTX480. In case someone is interested check

I just checked Silverstone site, and the FT05 can fit card up to 12.3'' and this card is 12.8'', so it wont fit even if i wanted, so sticking with MSI.

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
The gigantic triple-slot cooler/heatsink solution of Zotac GTX 1080/1070 AMP Extreme looks very promising as long as you can fit one of them in your chassis (it's regrettable you can't). This card could potentially be THE quietest GTX 1080/1070 card in US market. I suppose Palit/Gainward GTX 1070/1080 cards are the quiestest as of now in EU/Asian/Australian markets. Anyway, I'm really glad to see a few triple-slot cards in Pascal generation.
Maybe you should change your chassis if you are a "true" silence-seeker.

If i were to drop the FT05, probably will be when i decide to go water with Caselabs, but i fear the pumps, but will see, its one of those things that i do want to try, just not ready to do it. In the mean time will be MSI gaming cards with MK26, thats as good as it gets for me, i do want to try Noctua NF-P14R PWM on the MK26.ggumdol wrote:Maybe you should change your chassis if you are a "true" silence-seeker.

Boy, NewEgg has not had hardly ANY 1080 cards in stock for several weeks now.
Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
Be careful with the new Zotacs AMP cards, as they cool very badly. My Zotac 1070 AMP always goes to 82 C when under heavy load and then starts throttling.Abula wrote:While im wating on the MSI GTX1080 Gaming X, one card that has recently caught my atention due to the triple slot cooler like the MSI GTX980 Lightning is the Zotac GTX1080 AMP! Seems MSI starting to release their Z cards, personally i dont see them too apealing consider the X is already more expensive than most 1080s, but in case someone is into RGB lightning,

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread
Thanks for sharing your personal experience but our discussion so far has been centered on "AMP Extreme" rather than "AMP". From the viewpoint of a silence-aware user, the seemingly meagre heatsink of "AMP" expectably leads to such a poor cooling performance.
