Help me choose between these 2

They make noise, too.

Help me choose between these 2

Post by Wedge » Thu Apr 01, 2004 12:34 pm

My old GF2 -- gonna make it a bit quieter.

Solution 1: IceBerq4 Pro CCB-4AP copper heatsink. Take that plastic cover and fan off, then mount a Panaflo L1A in its direction. Undervolt the L1A.

Solution 2: Zalman ZM50-HP fanless heatpipe.

Things to consider:
The copper heatsink seems easy to install and unless that plastic cover doesn't want to come off, an 80mm L1A should be more than enough cooling. Also, this comes with ram sinks.

The heatpipe on the other hand, is completely fanless, but seems to be a hassle to install.

Which would cool the best? Don't know.

Give me your opinions people.

I would go for the heatpipe. I have one, and yes, the install is somewhat fiddly, but if you take your time I'm sure you'll find it's well worth the effort.

Thanks, Pjotor. Does it take up a PCI slot?

I just noticed the Zalman web site recommends the ZM80-HP for GF2 Ultra cards instead of the ZM50-HP. Why???

Edit: I'm still unsure which method I want to try between the Vantec copper heatsink and the Zalman heatpipe.

Is your GF2 an Ultra or a standard version? The reason Zalman would recommend the ZM-80 for the Ultra version is due entirely to the increased heat from the Ultra version. If it is standard, then I too would choose the heatpipe.

I have used the Zalman ZM17-CU glue-on heatsink on a standard GF2 (with the overhead bracket and a 5V 80mm fan) with perfect results, in case that helps you...

You would probally be fine just putting a Zalman NB-47J. IRC the Geforce 4 MX is pretty much clocked the same as Geforce 2s with all most the same feature set and many of the Geforce 4 MX are sold with passive cooling solutions so there should be no problems running it with a zalman northbridge heatink.

To answer Al's question: yes I have the Ultra (the best video card ever made in world -- well, at least it was 3 years ago).

To Cyberpukish: Any of the solutions we have mentioned that work for the Ultra will also work for the GF2 GTS.

Maybe so, assuming that you have a good vent that is pulling air in from the front so that some fresh air can touch the card.

I have a NVIDIA Geoforce 2 GTS 32 MB, and recently removed the fan and put a Panaflo 80mm L1A running at 5 volts over-head on top of the video card (centered on the top of the card). I attached the fan to a cross brace that my Gateway case has. I left the adjacent PCI slot cover open to get some fresh air. So far no problems. I don’t think the OEM fan moved much air.

If had to replace the heatsink, I would consider the IceBerq4 Pro CCB-4AP with the Panaflo. But I wasn't sure how easy the old heatsink comes off, so I just left it there.

The NB-47J works great on my Gf2 GTS as far as I can tell, I've used it for a few weeks now and it's rock-stable. It does get kind of hot though, so I wouldn't recommend it in a system with bad airflow.
