How quiet is the arctic VGA silencer on a 9800 PRO?

They make noise, too.

How quiet is the arctic VGA silencer on a 9800 PRO?

Post by jblinkj182 » Tue May 11, 2004 10:09 am

I am just thinking ahead and I have a couple questions. I am not a quiet freak but if I could make my system a little quieter with it then I might.

Anyways, at stock speeds is it quieter than the 9800 PRO stock cooler? Also I have heard that you can Overclock the card to 9800 XT settings, is this hard to do, is OCing this video card hard?

Basically genreal questions, thanks :)

Yes, it's quieter than the stock cooler. And yes, it's easy to overclock as long as you have a masters in Electrical Engineering, and a steady hand.

It's quiet! I can barely hear mine on my Radeon 9800 Pro...

I use omega drivers and overclocked it a while ago, but set it back to stock once I reformatted my HDD's. It's easy to do via Omega Radlinker.

At low it's very quiet , at high it's pretty noisy but always hugely quieter than the reference ATI cooler.

Overclocking it is pretty easy , but your card may or may not reach 9800XT speeds.
The easiest way to overclock it should be ATItool , since it also automatically tests for artifacts.

Is it like the A64 MSI boardscool and quiet stuff, will it go faster when gamning and back to quiet when just webbrowsing?

I dont care for the OC really, jw, but for now lets say I am not ;)

The fan speed on the Silencer is controlled via a toggle switch on the PCI plate, its not automatic.

Even on low speed its cooling power is equal to that of the stock Ati cooler. If you're not overclocking, you can just leave it on low all the time. (even if you do overclock, you can usually just leave it on low anyway)

i installed one on my 9800 non-pro, it was very easy.

With ramsinks fitted and a flash to a new bios, i have it at 420/390, which is beyond XT speeds, and i keep the arctic cooler on it's low setting.

It's very easy. I did it blindfolded. Seriously, it's simple and you can overclock (if you wish) with the fan on "low" setting.

And yes the link you posted is the correct one. Order, install, and enjoy. Just be sure your case already has good ventilation/airflow.
