They make noise, too.

H/S removal on an ATI AIW 8500DV

Post by trpltongue » Tue Jul 06, 2004 12:01 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to silence my PC and have come down to the video card. I want to remove the stock H/S and fan and replace it with a larger H/S with some air directed over it. Problem is, my ATI AIW 8500DV doesn't have mounting holes. How do I remove the heatsink?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've removed two 8500 heatsinks successfully this way..

Take a credit card, slide it under the heatsink on the AGP connector side.
Take a flat head screwdriver, slide it between the heatsink and credit card.
Pry gently, moving back and forth. It should pop off.

Some people like to stick it in the freezer for 10-15 min, or play a game for 10-15 minutes to make it easier to get the heatsink off.

You'll need to clean off all the gunk afterwards.. I've found acetone works quite well at dissolving the stuff.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks Zoob, that helps a lot. I'll definitely try to do it that way.

I can only second zoob. Did it with my old Radeon AIW, and it worked fine. Just be carefull not to apply to much pressure. As I recall it, you apply some pressure, and after a few seconds you can feel the glue giving in and the heatsink comes of.

Thanks guys,

I've found a better way though. You first remove the card from the AGP slot, then replace it with a Saphhire 9600Pro Ultimate

Works like a charm and totally silent.
