too hot 9800 pro

Post by smifou » Wed Jul 07, 2004 11:44 am

im just typing to say my experiences so other 9800pro users dont have to worry. i use a 9800pro with zalman vga cooler zm80c.it actually received a lil tiny airflow on its top from my side panel fan. during winter it was ok but summer.. damn both heatsink were hot, boiling hot. one day while playing a game, the monitor turns off like if the video card shut itself down. it kept repeating in games until i ducted my side panel fan toward the top heatsink of the vga cooler. its ok now. Im pretty confident you cannot overheat an ati 9800pro since it looks like it has some thermal protection. am i right or wrong ? god damn that video card produces so much heat..

YES.

It is by far the hottest part of my computer. When I was deciding what graphics card to buy, I thought 9600XT for $150, 9800P for $200 and got the 9800P. When I'm playing a game the PSU fan ramps up to max. I haven't had any problems with overheating, but I need to get the air out of the case somehow and will probably buy a silencer.

I have the HIS 9800P Ice Q http://www.hisdigital.com/html/iceq9800_pro.htm
And it's always cool and quiet.

You might try adding the Arctic VGA cooler

I have one of those and find that the card is exceptionaly hot.. My case temps went up by about 5'c and cpu idle temps went up about the same. After a little gaming session the pcb of the card is very very hot to touch, also found that you can feel a lot of air escaping around the fan on the silencer.....still it is so quiet.
