Update - ATI 9100 Temps and Heatsink Options

Post by EdT » Sat Dec 25, 2004 11:19 am

I just removed the intergrated fan/sink on my ATI 9100 Radeon that was causing more ruckus than all my 5 fans combined. Had to heat up the sink with a heat gun to soften the epoxy and pulled the sink off with a pair of pliers what are my options in going fanless on this BGA chipset ?, would ideally like a heatsink with holding clip that snaps onto the BGA, where can I get these ? the metal part of the BGA center is round, I know there are radial clip on heatsink out there that would be ideal, but where do you get them retail at low quanities ?

...for under $1.00cdn($.82us)

Picked up some BGA and ram chip heatsinks for less than a buck ! BGA sinks $.20ea x 1 and ram sinks $.10ea x 8 !

First I had to remove the old intergrated fan/sink that was epoxied onto the Radeon chipset. I used a heat gun on the sink for less than 10 seconds and then twisted it off with a pair of plier with ease (epoxy becomes soft and jelly like (@150C-200C).

Heatsinks that are going to be put on the chipset and ram sinks for the memory chips. Notice the Chomerics ThermoAttach 412 thermal conductive tape I will be using to attach the heatsinks on.

Cleaned off all surfaces on the components and heatsinks that are going to be adhered to with a cotton swab and some rubbing achool.

Et Volia, all the heatsinks are stuck in place on the Radeon chipset and the memory chips.

For over two years I have a BBA radeon 8500 (it was renamed to 9100 later on) in my computer. For over a year now I am using it with the original heatsink, that is quite small, with the fan turned off. I play 3d games from time to time, the card gets hot, but runs flawless (no artifacts or errors of any kind).
