They make noise, too.

Passive 6600 GT

Post by Tzupy » Wed Jan 19, 2005 10:49 am

The passive Gigabyte 6600 GT back side (at last I found a review, but it's in Dutch, I think):

They have a nice comparison of the noise levels on page 2

Nice! Thanks for the link.

The small size of the heatsink confirms my belief that the standard 6600GT's (with heatsinks almost as large on the front) are very accepting of slow-spinning fan mods.

The card (NX66T128VP) got very good benchmarks in the Legion Hardware 6600 GT roundup.
Gigabyte NX66T128VP: This is possibly my favorite GeForce 6600 GT graphics card featuring a very elaborate cooling design. This is Gigabyte’s flagship GeForce 6600 GT product featuring two gaming titles, two software titles, an overclocked core and memory, along with a completely silent cooling design. Through the use of heatpipes Gigabyte has been able to eliminate the need for active cooling. Furthermore the card features a 15MHz overclocked core and a 150MHz overclocked memory frequency. This makes the NX66T128VP a member of the TurboForce family. While the card does idle quite hot, at about 55 degrees, it has not run into any stability problems after weeks of testing.
This product also looked quite impressive and although it was slightly more expensive at $220 US it was the only product to feature a passively cooled GPU. In addition to this the card was also slightly overclocked from factory which also made it the fastest GeForce 6600 GT card in the roundup. The NX66T128VP will be receiving the Legion Hardware “Performance Award”, not just because it was overclocked but because it featured an excellent performing cooling setup.
Now if it would start selling in the U.S...

Now, if they could only make an AGP version of it. It would save me the trouble of buying one and trying to fit an aftermarket cooler on it that fits weirdly because the GPU is in a weird place.

I found a thread on the nVidia forums where a few 6600GT (fanned and passive) users are complaining of load temps exceeding 90C. Think they just have piss-poor case cooling, or do these cards run hotter than average?

And it looks like the GigaByte 6600GT SilentPipe is finally available in the U.S.: ZZF
$220, I think free shipping.

the 6600 GT start to throttle at 127C wich means they are either extremly resistant to high temp or they think you are supposed to bake Pancake on that... ;)

They might go higher than 90C. My 5900XT w/ ZM-80C gets to almost 90C (88C is the highest it has gotten so far), and it took a good bit of work to get it that way (in fact, making the PC almost as loud as having an extra fan for the ZM-80C :), like Zalman suggests). With that small HS on the Gigabyte, it might get that high. However, with good case cooling, I wouldn't be too worried about it overheating (I would watch it, though, and give it some heavy loads in the first few weeks!).

Man that is sweet. Hope it gets to the us market in the under $200 range. Gygabyte has really been impressing me with a lot of passive cards. I found a 9600pro today at newegg http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductde ... 169&DEPA=1

I thought sapphire made the only passive 9600.

Hey, I just noticed this post.
That's looks like exactly what I'm looking for.
Now I've gotta find one in Canada.

Hmm, that 6800 looks good. The 6800 actually needs less power than the 6600 (for some reason) and would probably even better suited to passive cooling.

Another thing that scares me about that 6600 is that the description says AGP8X but the picture is of a PCI-E version.
Every Gigabyte video card I find seems to have a slightly different cooler on it too.

OMG same here!!! AHHH!!! And I just ordered one of those VM-101 with the inferior eVGA 6600 for like almost the same price!! (well, $200 for both + tax + shipping)

Looks like the picture they used is this one ..

GV-NX66128DP
http://tw.giga-byte.com/VGA/Products/Pr ... 6128DP.htm

I think the PCI-e 6600 GT we all want is this ...

GV-NX66T128VP
http://tw.giga-byte.com/VGA/Products/Pr ... T128VP.htm

So I guess the 'NX' means PCI-e, and 'N' is AGP. Which means the one Acctech sells is AGP.

Where in Canada can we find the PCI-e one?? :?:

I wonder if anyone has this service to import goods from the US .. sort of like Borderfree a while back ... http://www.shopthestates.com

With that service it would be only $5 fee + whatever it costs to ship from them to our CDN address + customs fee.

Since Zipzoomfly has free shipping to US addresses, it probably wouldn't be a bad deal to buy from them. Since with the current exchange rate ($212 US = $260 CAD), it's still cheaper than buying a 6600GT + fanless VGA cooler seperately.

ARRGGGHH ... if only I had known about this ... be sure to pick this up and don't make the same mistake as me!

Also if you're in the GTA area, I found the Gigabyte GeForce 6800 w/128Mb AGP (GV-N68128DH) for $397 at PC Village. http://pcvillagecanada.com/Hardware.asp ... deo%20Card

A little too pricey for most users though.
