They make noise, too.

Passive cards compared...

Post by toaom » Mon Sep 19, 2005 5:00 am

I've been looking around the web for a good comparison on heat, performance and power consumption of several passive cards, but the fact that some of these cards haven't hit the market yet (it seems) isn't helping.

I'm looking for a comparison between:
- ASUS AEX 800 Silencer 2xDVI (PCIe) VIVO
- ASUS EN6600GT Silencer 1xDVI 1xVGA (PCIe) VO
- GigaByte 6600GT Passive VIVO 1x DVI 1xVGA (PCIe)

Lower performance than these isn't really an option. VIVO is nice, but TV-out is a requirement. So s double DVI.

What I've found so far:
ASUS AEX 800 Silencer 2xDVI (PCIe) VIVO

(229 euro)
Double DVi and VIVO are a plus. Solution is completely silent. It's a tat slower than the EN6600GT and as far as I can tell it also produces slightly more heat. Innovative heatpipe design will work well with my (soon to buy) p180 case.

ASUS EN6600GT Silencer 1xDVI 1xVGA (PCIe) VO
(192 euro)
Too bad it only has TV-Out. It's a bit cheaper than the AEX800, but a bit more expensive than the GigaByte. Heatpipe construction is the same as the AEX800 card. It has only single DVI, but it does support SLI, which is a nice thing to have, but probably not something I'll be investing in any time soon.

GigaByte 6600GT Passive VIVO 128 MB
(175 euro)
Again only one DVI port. The cooler construction works, but get's pretty hot according to a number of reviews. The construction of the heatsink isn't as good as it could be aswell it seems (not completely parallel to the pcb and comes very close to other components). It does have VIVO (eurpean model at least) and it works in DVI.

Currently I'm mostly considering the two ASUS alternatives, but they haven't yet hit the market here in Holland and it has been hard finding conclusive meterial on these cards.

Any input is welcome. Alternative in the 150-250 euro segment is also welcome. Some definitive numbers on heat produced would also be nice...

Powerconsumption can be found in this article.

AFAIK, these are available as either 6600 or 6600GT cards, not 6800GTs. Unless you've spotted something I haven't?

There's also this other card by GigaByte, but it's a little too expensive to my taste (290 euro)
http://www.giga-byte.com/VGA/Products/P ... 0L256V.htm

And this 6600GT 256 MB card, which I haven't been able to find a price for here in holland. It is dual DVI however which makes it a nice alternative:
http://www.gigabyte.de/VGA/Products/Pro ... 6T256D.htm

This French site puts it at 220 euro, but I'm wondering if it has the same TV-IN support found on the VGA+DVI 128 MB alternative.

The first shop in holland that has this one is Azerty. They price it at 191 euro, quite a bit cheaper than the French put it.

Now the choice is between the gigabyte 6600GT 256MB and the Asus AEX800 256MB. The only difference between them is th echip that powers them and TV-IN support on the Asus card.

help?
