Zalman Reality Check.

I chose the Zalman VF700-CU and installed it successfully on the old X800- thanks to everyone for their advice in previous threads!

I just want to check my GPU temperature with other users of the VF-700, which is connected at 5 volts. I'm using ATI Tools to check temps.

With 2 Panaflo case fans installed (1 intake and 1 exhaust) both running at 12 volts, the ATI Tools GPU temp reading of my X800/VF700 was about 34-35 degrees when watching TV on my PC- full screen.

However, as soon as I lowered one of the Panaflo fans (the intake one) to 5 volts- the GPU temp increases to 37-38 degrees (the temp chip is 36) when watching TV.

I was wondering if this sounds OK or is a bit on the high side? Thanks.

Those temps are excellent

I dont have a VF700 on a X800, but with the ZM80D-HP on my x800XL idles at 53c and peak load temps above 90.. It doesnt get much airflow, no artifacts and its stable so its fine though i will make some major changes soon.. If im not too tired from working all day, its a learning on the job period thing from school so i dont even get paid for it.. Aanyway..... YOur temps are excellent

Yes, those temps are great. So low, that I may be worried that they're slightly on the low side. Temp sensors aren't all that accurate. I have a VF700Cu on a 6600GT and my temps vary from 49-61ºC from idle to load. I have a 6800 that idles at 65 and gets up to 85ºC during load without any artifacts or instability. But, that one has a passive cooling solution.

If I were you, I'd turn the intake and exhaust fans down to 7V or lower. Getting up to 50ºC won't hurt your GPU, but it will certainly help your ears

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, apparantly, the X800 core can easily withstand 120 degrees C.

Regarding turning both fans down to below 7 volts, please refer to my new thread over in Fans and Control, as I'm have problems with a fanmate.

How are you measuring your temps? I'm using Tray Tools.

Well, both my cards are nVidia based cards from Gigabyte. I read the temps for the 6600GT off nVidia control panel, and the 6800 has temps from the Gigabyte software V-Tuner 2. For some reason, I can't get V-Tuner 2 to read temps off my 6600GT, just clock speeds. I could muck around and try to fix it, but I'm satisfied with the nVidia control panel.

I think TrayTools is an ATI product much like the nVidia control panel. They may work on products from other manufacturers, but I'm not sure. Temps would probably read the same if they do since they will both be reading from the same temp sensor. IIRC, accuracy is just a matter of whether the sensor is calibrated correctly, nothing to do with software.

my 7800gtx with the zalman runs around 43idle and maxes out around 70 at load.

I turn the fan up to 12v with the fan controller to game, and run it at 5v when idle. it is easily the loudest fan in my computer.

Although my GPU temps (see above) seem very good, one side effect of changing one of the case fans from 12 to 5v, is that the CPU eventually ramps up worse than before. Need to think about slowing it down, through the BIOS, Speedfan and/or getting a better cooler

My 6800 stays at 46 degrees idle and maxes to 48 at full load. I'm using a nexus fan on top of the VF700-Cu between 850 and 1400 RPM so it's silent all the time

Wow.... my 9800XT Idles at about 62°C and after playing games, gets into the high 70°'s. Thats with an ATi Silencer 3 rev1 running at default voltage.

Its not so silent....
