Thermalright V-1 Revision
I shot a quick inquiry to Thermalright about their V-1 cooler, and this is what I got (both messages quoted directly):

Hey guys,
Long time very satisfied Thermalright customer here (from the slk days). I need to cool down a 7800GT, and I'm wondering if the V-1 will cut it, or if you have something else coming down the pike. To be honest, I took a pass on the V-1 for my 6800GT because the design is not exactly the high quality, well thought out stuff I've come to expect from you, but I am willing to give it a shot if you tell me it will cool better than a NV Silencer.
Thanks,
[poet]
Hi [poet],
Thank you for your inquiry.
If you wait for a few days, a new version of the V-1 will be out in full force. This new version of the V-1 will be able to handle the hottest GPUs and also up-coming future GPU’s, and yes we believe it will out perform any NV Silencers. Please check out our website from time to time for most current news about our line up.
Thank you for taking interest in Thermalright products.
Best regards,

Interesting, no?

Awesome. I'm also a long-time fan of Thermalright products, but--like you--I skipped over the V-1 (for the same reasons) and got an NV Silencer 5. After going through 2 of those (the fans went bad) I switched to Zalman VF700-CU. The Zalman is very quiet and powerful, but I think the sector needs more competition, and Thermalright is just what it needs. Please update this thread if you find any information on this new cooler!

I'm trying to get a ship date. Here's the mail:
Awesome! I can't wait. Are you aware of the release date, or is that confidential?
Thanks,
[poet]
Hi [poet],
The exact release date is a tentative one. But what is sure is that it should be announced in two weeks. Also, please calculate the time for the resellers to import products and that might take sometime from a week to a month.
Thank you.

So they're asking us to be patient. No problem for me, I'll not get my new card before January price cuts, but I wonder if others can stand their stock fans that long...
As far as I can speculate:
1. the V-1's major issues were RAM cooling (see nVidia 6800 series) and compatibility
2. Thermalright is well known for their effective utilization of heatpipe technology
3. Thermalright is also well known for using the largest fan available, but
4. 25mm fans take up a lot of space, reducing the space in which to use heatpipe technology, so...
I predict either a minor revision of their V-1, with a better implemented design (i.e. better placement of the heatpipes), or a no-holds-barred mega 92mm fanned four heatpipe kludge similar to the stock cooler on the GTX 512. Either way, I want one!

It comes out, named V-1 Ultra.

So 10 gm heavier, but the photos and specs seem otherwise identical. Their installation pages use the exact same photo for the retention bracket for the V1 and Ultra (but labelled seperately as V1 and V1 Ultra brackets), but somehow they're now compatible with the 7800 series? Perhaps they just haven't bothered to update the photo of the bracket, or maybe they just got enough positive feedback from peeps who've gone ahead and tried the V1 on their 7800's successfully, so Thermalright feels confident claiming full compatibility now? I don't see a real "Ultra" just yet, but will patiently await details of the changes...

There's an extra heatpipe. My reaction to that is:
"That's it?"
Sure it'll cool the GPU better, but what about the RAM? What about reducing fan noise (32Db is a little high for me)? What about exhausting heat outside the case? Also, for my annual February spending spree, will it cool the GTX512 better than stock?

Well, I believe this VGA cooler is from Scythe, it's the VNCU-01NA. That cooler and the VNCU-02NA was seen at Computex 2004 in Taipei (it looks as if they only was prototypes at the time) but they never got out on the market as it seems, except that MSI used the VNCU-01NA for some of their cards sold in Asia. There's no info about them on any Scythe website, the only indication that Scythe was involved in the production somehow, apart from the fact that the coolers use Heatlane technology and the naming of the coolers, is that they are called Scythe coolers at The Silent PC website and in TrustedReviews Computex 2004 covering.

I'm ordering this in a few days. Anyone want a review (something like my NV Silencer 5 Rev.3 review, located here) ?

Can you see if you can mount a standard 25 mm fan like panaflo in pull configuration, i.e. sucking the air through the fins instead of blowing down onto the videocard. Would be awesome if you could do that, then the heat could be quickly exhausted outside through the rear exhaust fans, almost as good as Arctic Silencers but without annoying click noise.warriorpoet wrote:I'm ordering this in a few days. EDIT: meh, just checked, doesn't look like it's gonna fit in my rig, there just isn't enough clearance between videocard and heatsink. Looks like I'm going to be stuck with clicking Arctic Silencer for a while until something better comes along... *sigh*

a roundup consists of 8 coolers on 6800GS,comparing V1 vs V1-Ultra
not a low noise type review though...
AeroCool PC Aircon
Arctic Cooling NV Silencer5 (rev.2)
Arctic Cooling Accelero X1
Evercool Turbo2
Thermalright V1
V1-Ultra Thermalright
Titan Eagle (TTC-CSC82TB(DIY))

Hey TR added 1 more heatpipe and reduce temp by 10C,they might put magic into that 3rd heatpipe
