This is the card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125214
The cooler as you might expect works very well, but the fan appears to always be running at the same speed... that is, full. At this speed, and with the other quiet components in my case, it is by far the noisiest part of my system. I thought nvidia drivers were supposed to automatically lower fan speed in 2D mode, but even aside from that, 3rd party apps aren't working either. I've tried:
77.77 drivers and 81.95 drivers
with
RivaTuner, Expertool (Gainward), V-Tune (Gigabyte)
RivaTuner has fan options, but they don't work. Same with Expertool. V-Tuner, which came with the card, has no fan options. Apparently the "plus" version has fan options, but that's not the version that came with my card.
The cooler is plugged directly into the VGA PCB with a standard black/red two-pin two-wire connector, which looks just like the connector on other 7800's I've seen
Help, factory Zalman-cooled Gigabyte 7800GT won't slow fan

I would just by a fanmate if it was me. I am getting the Gigabyte 7800 GT because of the rebate and if I would have ordered last week I would have got call of duty free too, but that is ok. I have an extra fanmate lying around and I am going to use that to slow the card down. Will report results next week.
someone here in these forums kludged together a 3-pin to 4 pin adapter to use a fanmate with. dunno where the post is exactly but this seems exactly the reason why he didn't buy the vf700 aftermarket--he wanted to keep warranty and not mess around with it.
turns out you pay more, for less, with the gigabyte. no ramsinks, no fan adapter that comes with the vf700 so no silent vga.
or i think what they did was kludge/rewire the 4-pin normal zalman fan connector to a 3pin one to work with their default header on the 6800gt video card instead of plugging into one of the psu wires.
