The best solution for Palit GF 6600 GT AGP

They make noise, too.

The best solution for Palit GF 6600 GT AGP

Post by tonalt » Sat Dec 31, 2005 4:45 am

Hi

I just bought this videocard and I was wondering, that what is the most silent cooler for it? Searched some forums and it looks like there's only a couple of compatible coolers for it.

Arctic Cooling NV Silencer6
Zalman VF700-CU
Zalman VF700-ALCU

What you think? I was used to the silence of my passive Ti4200 :/

Thanks

Happy New Year 2006!

When I read "Palit" I knew it was a finn posting...

Is there a particular reason why you won't go passive with this one also? You don't need much case airflow to make a good passive GFX cooler work. Have you considered Zalman ZM80D, Aerocool VM-101 or 102?

Another finnish poster just slapped a VM-102 on his 6800LE and he was happy with it, also I've had good experiences with it.

Out of the three coolers you mentioned I would go for a VF700. (But I think you'll want to swap the fan on it eventually)

Hyvät uudet vuodet sinnekin!

:)

From Zalman website (ZM80D):
This product cannot be installed on nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT and 6800 Ultra because they do not have 3mm heatsink installation holes. Also, this product cannot be installed on nVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT AGP, 6600 AGP, and PCX 5*** series products.
From Aerocool website (VM-102):
VM-102 is compatible with ALL VGA cards
So I guess I go for VM-102 :) It's quite expensive and it looks like I need to buy little heatsinks for memory, but what you wouldn't do when it's question about silence.

Nyt menen juomaan viinaa ;)

I'm playing the same record over and over again to the finnish users...

Try Silencio's shop for a good price, SPCR discount and cheap shipping. You can get the VM-102 from him including shipping for a bit cheaper when compared to buying it form a local finnish store.

Try to get some explicit verification that it will fit the 6600GT AGP before you buy the cooler, this vendor states that it won't.

Hi, just wondering where it says you need to buy heatsinks for memory. Thx!

the stock cooler covers both the GPU and the HSI chip. The Palit card doesnt follow the nvidia reference design.

If you are going to install an aftermarket cooler, you need another small heatsink to cover the HSI chip, then also consider whether your GPU heatsink can clear the HSI heatsink.

I'm interested to know whether the VM102 can be installed on a 6200/6600 card with the HSI heatsink though. Seems like the heatsink on the front of the VM102 is too big (unlike VM101) to be able to clear the HSI heatsink.

Ok my card looks like this: http://www.ixbt.com/video2/images/nv43- ... -front.jpg

I'm afraid that there's no chance to use fully passive cooler, so I thought that if any of the coolers will fit, it will be Zalman VF700-CU. But look at this site: http://www.zalman.co.kr/product/cooler/ ... T_eng.html

So I need extra heatsink for the HSI chip. What about if I use this or this? Will there be enough room?

Actually, Zalman got a heatsink for the HSI chipset, the ZM-VHS1.

I installed Zalman VF700-CU and ZM-VHS1. It was trickier than I assumed.

Image
There wasn't enough room so I had to move memory heatsinks "a little bit". I hope that it doesn't cause any overheat problems.

Image
Finally I managed to attach VF700-CU.

Image
I also attached Fanmate 1 with ghetto style.

Welcome to the ghetto.

Here you can see how I finally positioned the memory heatsinks. That's the best way to place them without removing any metal..

Fanmate is at it's minimium voltage and the sound isn't that bad. At least it's acceptable till I buy new PCI-E rig and then think again about the graphics card problem.

memory heat sinks are not even required! :)

mine are still sitting in the box, idle 43c, load 52c 6600gt @ 550/1100 8)

now i realize the gpu temps do not indicate mem temps, but there's no artifacts in any game i play and the stock cooler wasn't even close to making physical contact w/ them.

This thing has started to keep really annoying ticking noise.. it starts after ~24h, then I stop the fan with pen and let it spin again. The ticking noise stops, but I have to do this again after ~24h. Any suggestions?

Go custom if your up for it :). I just drilled out some holes in an old copper cpu HSF and went and bought a mounting kit for a swifttech waterblock to attach it (couldn't fine the right size bolts anywhere... ah well). A 120mm fan mounted over the whole lot, and you have a quieter AND better performing solution then anything on the market. ;)

On the other hand, this looks pretty good. Just remove the stock fan and attach a quieter one.

Agreed.

Here's my Gainward 6600 AGP:

The heatsink was liberated from a P2-350 that used to live in a SFF compaq system. It makes contact with the core and HSI chip, and is held on with push-pins.

It runs at around 73°c (at 22°c ambient) under heavy load while passive, and 35°c under load with the fan at 5v (approximately 700rpm). That's with the core overclocked to 440mhz by the way. :)
