looks like nightmare for me....it employes vertical mounting screw:peterson wrote:How easy is it to swap a fan on a VF900?

glue/double sided sticky tape would be hard if not impossible to be done,it's only a half of the base that support the fan,and to make it worse the base is not a full member, rather a 'frame'
there's no doubt that this thing is an improvement from VF-700 in performace, but they way they chose the fan&it's mounting mechanism is none to applaud at....
EDIT:grammar
Making a fan holder out of a piece of sheet metal and then glue it to the back of the new fan seems like the best idea to me.
Another way is to make a circular shaped piece of sheet metal with two holes and mount it in the innermost (2) holes for the card mounting, see third pic from tweakers4u above, you can see one of the holes in the center to the left.
It's one of four holes (you only use 2 holes for the fan in my example) for mounting alternative "2" in the photo above (for NVIDIA Geforce4 Ti 4*** Series, FX 5700(Ultra) Series, FX 5800 Series, 6600 Series (except 6600 AGP Series)), so if you're putting it on any of these cards you have to do some extra tweaking. Then you glue the new fan to it and mount it with two screws.
Maybe it doesn't even have to have a circular shape, it looks like you can squeeze in a piece of sheet metal between the card holders and the fins in the first pic from tweakers4u. If so the you can use any of the holes you want. But then you'll have trouble removing the new fan if you ever want to.
Otherwise you can always rip apart the old fan and glue the backside of it on top the new fan, but remember that this will put the fan a couple of mm away from the HS. This is not so good since you're probably not using a low profile fan for this, you want it close to the HS and not pointing out too much above it.

noise...
Actually there's supposed to be a small difference in noise level on the VF900 also, 25dB at max, vs. 28.5 for the VF700, although it certainly isn't very much...m0002a wrote:What they need is a quieter fan than the VF700, not more cooling capacity on the HS. This would not be a big issue except that replacing the fan on these is not as simple as just buying a new fan. Of course, I don't knoow anything about the fan on the VF900, but one can only hope.
Re: noise...
I think that's only because the fan at max spins faster on the VF700: 2650 to 2400Modesto wrote:Actually there's supposed to be a small difference in noise level on the VF900 also, 25dB at max, vs. 28.5 for the VF700, although it certainly isn't very much...m0002a wrote:What they need is a quieter fan than the VF700, not more cooling capacity on the HS. Which is because the VF900 comes with a FanMate AFAIK.JVM wrote:I think that's only because the fan at max spins faster on the VF700: 2650 to 2400Modesto wrote:Actually there's supposed to be a small difference in noise level on the VF900 also, 25dB at max, vs. 28.5 for the VF700, although it certainly isn't very much...m0002a wrote:What they need is a quieter fan than the VF700, not more cooling capacity on the HS.
