7900GT and 7900GTX reviews are out

They make noise, too.

7900GT and 7900GTX reviews are out

Post by frostedflakes » Thu Mar 09, 2006 9:15 am

Results are about what one would expect. Those looking for balls-to-the-wall performance may be slightly disappointed, but I, personally, am very exited, as nVidia seems to be very concerned with efficiency, and it shows with G71. System power consumption of a 7900GT, which is essentially a 7800GTX shrunk to 90nm, is 17w (so maybe about 13w DC assuming 80% efficiency) lower than the 7800GT and significantly lower than the 7800GTX (which the 7900GT performs slightly better than). :)

Personally I was more exited on the 7600GT as it outperformed 6800GS by approximately 20% in the benchmarks, especially in the 1280x1024 4xAA benchmarks, that are important imo as it is the max resolution of the 19" tft displays, that is currently the most popular monitor.

Checked around a little on prices and so.
Was thinking of getting a 7800GT but now...
7900GT outperforme a 7800GTX, it uses less energy than 7800GT and it costs the same as 7800GT...

I'm getting a 7900GT!
Overkill like a mad man tho :-P

The 7600GT and 7900GT look like killer cards. Faster. Cooler. Cheaper. Can't be beat! :D

I'm really interested in getting one of these new 7900gts. Currently it's for less than 300 at monarch. I was wondering would the vf700-cu be compatible with the 7900 gt. If it isn't I guess i'll have to shell out the extra cash for the accelero because I hear the vf900 is going to be quite an expensive cooler. How are arctic cooling products? I've heard that their silencer series products begin to get noisy after a few months of use.

Not that I can say for 100% certainty, but I think they didn't make any changes to the pcb layout. They just manufactured the GPU in a smaller process. So yeah, I think the same coolers that fit 7800GT should also fit 7900GT.

Wow. I think the 7600GT is the card I've been waiting for. Finally a decent and modern mid-range card. I just hope it'll be able to drive TES4: Oblivion at 1680x1040... But if not, I guess this is as close as I'll get. :) I'm tempted to order right now, but I think I'll give it another week - I just hope availability will be similar and not worse then.

PS -- any word on overclockability yet? I guess it won't be very good, though, at least not for the 7600GT, which is already clocked fairly high and limited by the narrow memory bus. Maybe you can unlock the other 128 bits. ;)

Aftermarket coolers....

Post by narrasuj » Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:42 am

Has anybody heard anything about the measurements of these cards (to fit aftermarket coolers like the Zalman or an AC cooler)?

Arctic Cooling Accelero X1 fits the 7800/7900 series and the Zalman VF-900 fits them both aswell. IDK if there's a cooler that fits the 7600GT.

I actually picked up an XFX 7900GT from Monarch, plan to put a Zalman ZM80D-HP on it -- I'll let you guys know how it works out. If it could handle the heat of my X800GTO, which is about 40-50w stock as well, I'm sure it'll be fine. :)

frostedflakes, I'd be careful because the XFX you bought is factory overclocked to 520 mhz/1500mhz. The XFX with the lifetime warranty seems like a really good deal for only 303 bucks shipped.

I'm thinking it should be fine, but worse-case scenario I can just reduce the clocks a bit. I was also planning to do BIOS or hardware undervolting eventually as well, so heat will definitely not be a problem then. :)

What I really want to know is: will an NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 fit on a 7900? If so, I have an eVGA 7800GT for sale.

I can't wait to see some 7600/7900 GT's with factory cooling solutions that are a bit more elegant than the reference box coolers.

I don't think I'll be selling my 7800GTX for one of these. June should see the arrival of the G80 with (if the rumours are true) 48 pixel pipelines, Direct X 10, pixel shader 4, 2500mhz DDR4 and most intriguingly the first dual core GPU with a possible 800mhz speed (cooling that could be interesting)

im glad i waited. just ordered one. here is nvidia's power requirements (not overclocked cards) if anybody is interested: these sources differ slightly:

7900 gtx: 350W-400W power supply (22-26A on the 12V rail)

7900 gt: 300W-350W power supply (20-23A on the 12V rail)

7900 gtx 450W (22A on the 12V rail)

7900 gt: 350W ( 20A on the 12v rail)

Galaxy cards those employ Zalman coolers are shown here
that passive 7600GT looks gorgeous 8) ,oh and a non-green PCB too
7900GT with VF900
7600 GT-VF700
Passive 7600 GT
6800XT (how would this one perform? :? any info about its performance&wattage?)

The new cards are not yet available on their site.
They are Hong Kong based company,so not as widely distributed over the world as taiwanese, but their previous 6600s&6800s are more affordable ones since they are equipped with lower price and Zalman cooler.

On another forum, someone modified the ACS 5 Rev.3 to fit a 7900GT. Here is the thread including pictures in post #9:

The one difference I see with the 7600GT equipped with the VF700 is the VF700 is plugged into the video card as opposed to running it at a constant 5 or 12 volts when purchased separately, and it looks like the Al-Cu version.

7900GT, it says in that thread. That's very good news, I think that's me sold on a 7900GT :)

No passive 7900GT out yet?

It should be out, since through my calculations, it actually consumes LESS power than my 6600GT!

I'm just grateful I bought an eVGA 7800GT in Jan and can use their step up program to get a 7900 GT for $5 + Shipping. They give you current MSRP credit on your trade in towards a new card.

I'll end up with 7800 GTX performance and 15W less power consumption.

I originally went eVGA for the lifetime warranty (supposedly even if you overclock). Makes sense since they release most cards with 2 overclocked versions.

=D

The step-up program is nice, but . . .

Yeah.... #185 for 7800GTX-->7900GTX. And I'm not paying an $80 premium for 0.05% faster gameplay, referring to their Super Uber Leet w00t OC version.

I figure having just bought the 7800 almost literally the day the 7900s were announced, if Nvidia has G80 out in early June (not likely according to what I've googled around for) I'll probably still be in the step-up q and be able to cancel it and go for the 8800 or whatever it'll be called!

I REALLY want to hear one of those two slot coolers in action... when I first saw the card I got excited because I thought they'd taken the NV Silencer idea and applied it well, exhausting all the hot air outside the case. Sadly looks like hot air blows out both ends, so only half of it ends up outside the case. Stupid.
