Underclock 2D-mode GeForce8800GTS?

They make noise, too.

Underclock 2D-mode GeForce8800GTS?

Post by zhai » Wed Nov 29, 2006 11:59 am

I'm wondering if it's possible to underclock the 2D mode of the 8800GTS. The main thing bothering me about the card is the large idle power draw, does anyone know what its default 2D clock frequency is and if it's possible to lower it significantly?

And what about undervolting, anyone seen something about that?

Also, what's the concensus about the 8800 series fan? I know lots of people say it's quiet, but is it SPCR quiet?

I believe it was reported to be 50 watts or something, but if it's anything like my 7800GT, neither the voltage nor clock speed have any effect on the power draw at idle. I can flash the bios of my 7800GT to do 475mhz @ 1.5v or 250mhz @ 1.2v and idle power is always the same. I've read some articles that say the processors already have some built in variable voltage and clock speed logic, separate from what the maximum 2D and 3D speeds and voltages are, so idle is the same regardless of what you set the BIOS to.
