8800 with a slot cooler ??

Post by NapalmDeath » Tue Mar 06, 2007 7:18 am

I just installed an evga superclocked 8800 GTS yesterday and was shocked by the temps. (core 576Mhz, mem 1700 Mhz stock OC)
65C idle, and 75C load (yes, I know overclocked and silent rarely go together, I'm trying to improve things)

Until some good aftermarket coolers come out for the 8800 GTS, has anyone considered a slot cooler? The 8800 has raised all my system temps by 5-8C. No doubt the stock cooler lacking in getting the heat out of the case.

What about putting a slot cooler like this one about 2 slots below the 8800?

Yes, i know it's hideous, but if the end 70mm were to be angled slightly upward to blow at the 8800, and the back 70mm is pulling air off the back slots of the 8800 and exhausting, wouldn't this slot cooler provide some relief? (the back slots some folks have suggested making a heat baffle to the adjacent slot). It could be undervolted (has a control knob on the back), and those tabs for the PCI could be cut off. Don't want to wear out a PCI slot.

My current setup is an Antec Solo case, with:
- 2x Nexus 92mm front cool air intake fans
- CPU Scythe Ninja with Nexus 120mm on front
- Enermax Liberty 500 modded with Nexus 120mm Fan
- Rear Nexus 120mm with NMT-2 controller (5-12V, 30-50C)

Hard Drive 36C sits between the 2 front 92mm fans
CPU Opteron 175 (dual core 2.2Ghz) 34-48C
GPU 8800 GTS (576/1700) 65-75C

I use my modded Enermax PSU as a heat indicator.
With the nexus fan and built in thermal control, at cold startup the fan doesn't spin until the system temp is 29C. Then it's at 450-500 rpm.
As things heat up the to 37C the fan is 670 rpm.
At full load (games) the PSU fan maxs at 950 rpm.

The NMT-2 will also spin up the rear 120mm fan to 900 rpm (max) under full load.

I've debated upgrading the rear fan to a higher rpm (Nexus caps 1k rpm), maybe something that could ramp up to 1800 rpm.

I think in the Antec Solo I also have the PSU and rear fan competing, since turning down the rear fan has (not on load) caused the PSU fan to ramp down.

At the current temps it's well within safe levels, but I'm trying to help get that 8800 heat out so that my original levels go back down 5-8C.

There is also this double slot 80mm fan that could be undervolted.

The uglyblitz has that 1 angled 70mm, figured you could bounce air off the 8800 and into the back 70mm exhaust. Now if there were a 120mm rear exhaust slot fan, that would be nice....

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

YES! It's a pretty well known & cheap fix!
