turning off my 8600 GTS

Post by Lt_Dan » Tue Jun 12, 2007 12:44 pm

Hi,
is there an option, or a program, that lets me turn off the power of my Graphics Card completely?
i have a Gigabyte 8600GTS SilentPipe 3 (no fan).
i'm running under Vista 64bit.
i want to shut it because, when i turn off the monitor, and not using the computer, the card still gets power. it heats up.
i want to cancel that so when i leave my computer on to DL, and i don't need the screen, it won't be so hot. which effects other components - and my room temp.
is there anything like this?
thanks a lot,
Dan.

Hello Dan,

It certainly would be a good thing to have the speed and power turned way down on a video card, when you aren't using it -- just like with CPU's. Maybe if you manually underclocked it? (If this is even possible?)
Sincerely, Neil

If there were something like that it would be awesome for my Gainward 8600GT SilenFX, not only to save on electricity and minimize heat but also to save the card a bit, although I'm pretty sure theres nothing that does that. You can underclock the core with an app that allows it although one bad thing of these utilities is that when you overclock the mem it doesnt downclock when you go 2d.

I occasionally pull my GFX card clock speeds down as far as possible (like, 100mhz as opposed to the 700mhz its used to) when it doesn't have to do anything for long periods of time. I have no clue on how much this actually decreases power consumption though.
