send back 8500 for 8600?

They make noise, too.

send back 8500 for 8600?

Post by stevenkelby » Sun Jun 17, 2007 6:07 am

I have this card, an Asus EN8500GT silent:

http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_907_ ... VIDEO_CARD

Is it worth sending it back and getting this one, http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_794_ ... VIDEO_CARD an 8600, which I hear is better? It's got a fan, but I have a HR-03A http://www.pccasegear.com/prod5082.htm coming anyway, would that be ok on the 8600?

It's going in a P182 with a 120mm fan blowing over it from the middle fan location.

No gaming really, but a bit of pic and vid editing and I want a bigger monitor, currently 19"

Worthwhile? Or should I do something else?

If you are not gaming then I wouldn't bother. The 8500GT is a nice desktop card.

No, don't bother. You could do fine with even integrated video. You can run the 8500GT passively. It doesn't need a fan blowing over it. I have a 7950GT with an HR-03 and no airflow.

OK thanks. If I was going to game, would I notice a difference between the cards? Are there any downsides, like maybe the 8600 makes more heat?

There would be a difference, but not as much as going from an 86 to an 88. The 86 would produce more heat, but it could still be cooled passively.

I agree, I apologize. I just tried running a nice new game of quake 1. 8500 was great!

thanks for playing!

Thanks for all the advice. Considering the lack of gaming I do, the $20 restocking fee I just found out about and the inconvenience, I will stick with the 8500 with the HR-03A (just about to lap and mount) and try overclocking it if I need more performance and can figure out what OC'ing is all about!

sounds like a good idea. its a heck of a lot faster than a 9800 pro, which is still what a lot of people use. Im sure its faster than a 6600GT which is fine for many games. im kinda used to my x1900 though.... be nice however to run much cooler.
