BenQ FP241WZ LCD monitor: Coil Hum on low brightness :(

Post by jubrany » Sat Jun 23, 2007 4:21 pm

The only way to kill this humming noise is to increase the brightness to 80-85. Way too bright. Using my video card control panel to offset the brightness makes the panel look unnatural.

Just wondering if anyone with this monitor has this problem. There's another person with the identical issue as me with the same monitor, but I was wondering if this is typical for this monitor or not...

I worked so hard to make my PC quiet, and in my very quiet room the monitor hum is annoying.

I did notice that if the monitor is not backed against a wall that the sound of the hum does not resonate nearly as bad...

Yeah, I have the same monitor and the same problem so it’s probably just the way it is. :(

The only suggestion is as you found, increase brightness to the level where hum disappears and then play around with brightness/contrast using video card drivers. You can also play around with RGB values if your monitor allows that (in hardware) which may help you get rid of the 'unnatural feel'.

I have exactly the same problem with a Dell 2407WFP, I suspect the underlying electronics/panel are identical. I had never noticed that changing the brightness stopped the hum before now so thanks for that, just wonder if I can use it at 85...

I think that this sort of behaviour isn't uncommon amongst LCDs (I've had a couple of LCD monitors do it, my HDTV does it too). I don't know what the precise cause is, I'd thought it might be something to do with the circuitry which is used to modulate the brightness of the backlight. Maybe things will get better when we get LED backlights!

I had this problem with my former LCD (Dell 2000FP). The sound would go away after warming up, though. Fortunately, I found out that at the default brightness (50, which was reasonable), it never emitted the sound.

My new NEC 20WMGX2 and my little 15" Dell don't have this problem. :D

I have a ViewSonic VG2030wm (1680 x 1050 20"). It begins to
squeal if I put the brightness below 97%! I've learned to live
with it. Lately, it makes a faint light-saber sort of hum if large
progress bars move quickly or if I quickly move a window
around on the screen. Call it special effects.
