POLL - successful passive HR-03 installations

They make noise, too.

POLL - successful passive HR-03 installations

Post by AlpineCarver » Wed Aug 01, 2007 2:03 am

i recently had a good experience with an HR-03 on an OpenGL-optimized video card (click here), and i'm now thinking about using one with a mainstream video card.

i'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has used an HR-03 successfully with no fan attached, in a quiet PC setup with slow enough air flow to be reasonably quiet.

it would be sufficient if you just gave the model of your video card, HR-03 version, GPU temp range, and a brief description of the air flow in your system.
i'll start:
video card - PNY Quadro FX 560 PCIe 128MB
original HR-03
GPU temp - idle 42C, load 51C
air flow: 1 x 120mm and 2 x 92mm case fans, running slowly enough to be pretty quiet

I used the HR-03 to cool a 7900GT factory OCed to 520 / 1430; it did reasonably well, but in the end I preferred to add a 92mm Nexus @ 6-800RPM that significantly reduced the temperatures without adding noise to my system

passive is really hard in this day and age...

i use a low speed fan on my HR-03 and it does wonders... i'm very happy with my HR-03 setup.

ATi radeon 1950XT
GPU temps: 60-90 degrees celsius...
2x nexus 120mm @5V

I'm using an eVGA 7950GT 512MB with an HR-03 passive. Idle is about 51C and I haven't measured load temps yet.

x1950pro with HR-03 passive. Only two fans in the system spinning 900rpm. Check the sig for pictures.

i found this thru the link in your sig: "X9150pro idle/load: 48C/73C". is that what you're currently getting with the passive HR-03?

a 92mm nexus running at around 6v is basically inaudible from anywhere outside the case, so theres really no reason to try and run it passive.

actually, those temperatures have decreased since I've removed the power supply from the case in hopes of swapping to a picpsu/pw200. Unfortunately it isn't going so hot, but yea, with a power supply in my case, and two case fans providing positive pressure, the video card idles around 48-50C and loads around 70C, seems to be very dependent on ambient temperature though.

It should coralate directly with ambient temperatues on a 1:1 ratio.

well, so far the only totally passive reports we have are:
  • PNY Quadro FX 560 PCIe 128MB
    eVGA 7950GT 512MB
    Sapphire X1950 Pro
anybody else cooling their video card with just a fanless HR-03?

I installed an HR-03 passively on a PNY VCG8600GXPB. It idled at 50C, and loaded to 82C. With a Nexus fan running at 7v, which I cannot hear, it idled at 42C and loaded to 53C. I used ATI Tool's 3D cube to load the GPU.

However, after loading the GPU to obtain temps, the card FAILED. No video signal. I loaded it until the temperature stopped increasing. I guess prolonged operation at >80C is a no go for this particular card.

I've ordered an MSI NX8600GT-T2D256E OC which I plan on installing the HR-03 on next. In reviews I've read, it was generally noted as running cool.

Right now, I have my HR-3 installed passively on a 7900GS. It idles at around 55C, and I will not be loading it. It's just a stand in until my new 8600GT arrives.

video card - Nvidia 7900GT OC to 535mhz
original HR-03
GPU temp - idle 50C, load 70C. Room temp 28C.
air flow: cooled by the 120mm fans above it in a P180. The Hr-03 is installed around the top of the card and gets the benefit of the airflow from the other fans nearby above it.

There was a discussion recently about another similar install. Do a search.
