Performance of 7950GT to 8600GTS or 7950GT SLI

They make noise, too.

Performance of 7950GT to 8600GTS or 7950GT SLI

Post by PretzelB » Wed Nov 07, 2007 4:35 pm

Anyone upgrade from a 7950GT to a 8600gts? I'm trying to figure out how I can judge the performance improvement I may get if I go SLI with my 7950GT vs upgrading to a silent 8600gts.

From a brief trip to Tom's VGA charts, your 7950GT is noticably faster than a 8600GTS. So changing to a GTS would actually be a downgrade. If you're looking for an upgrade, the only options I see are

a) SLI your 7950GT. (Passive of course)

b) Get a 8800GT. The 8800GT is new, and is faster than a 8800GTS. It's the only logical (single card) upgrade that I can think of. Maybe others can help on this.

Hope this helps. :)

7950 -> 8600 is NOT AN UPGRADE!

Edit: sorry about that

The only viable option that is actually an upgrade is the 8800GT with a passive cooler like the HR-03 GT

Well, I'm a bonehead. :oops:

I didn't know about that chart. Pretty nifty tool. I guess going SLI might be the thing to do.

I'm not so sure about the 8800GT. I scanned NewEgg and it looks like the prices are $260+ US. I might talk myself into that but all the models they have are with fans. I'd have to mod them myself and pay more for silence. Too pricey and too much work for me.

Then again, trying to match my 7950 might be impossible without some serious shopping.

Wait for the ATI HD3850, more performance and less power than your 7950. Less performance and less power than the 8800GT.

There will eventually be passive cards but not in the first batch.

all the choices are crap except for the 8800gt 512 which wasnt a choice

3850 might be the savior, 3870 definitely will be
