4-pin GPU Fan Connector & 12V PWM Fans?

They make noise, too.

4-pin GPU Fan Connector & 12V PWM Fans?

Post by victorpst » Fri Nov 16, 2007 6:37 am

Is it possible to use regular 12V PWM fans on 4-pin GPU fan connector found on some cards?

Specifically, I have a eVGA 8600GT 256MB card on which I want to fit a 92mm PWM fan. The original HSF had a 4-pin PWM fan which connected to a smaller than usual 4-pin header on the card. Can I plug in a regular PWM fan in this header with some modifications to the connector(s)?

OK..... I decided to go ahead with a small modification and connected a 92mm Rexflo PWM fan to the 4-pin connector on my eVGA 8600GT card. It works perfectly! The speed of the fan changes as per the load and through the Riva Tuner utility. The connection is just one to one.

This is what I'm looking to do with my 8800 GTX.

What modifications are needed to the fan connector?

I can confirm that the ATI 38x0 cards have the same fan connector scheme (4 pin connector, just make sure you know which end is ground). My ATI card has a tiny little 2mm pitch fan header, but I found an old CD-ROM audio cable with the same mating connector so I cut that off and made an adapter out of it, now I have my Nexus 92mm fan on my HR-03 running off of my graphics card. Of course I skipped the control connector since Nexus doesn't have one.
