Hybrid SLI - non performance mode

Post by davemuk » Thu Dec 20, 2007 8:09 am

This sounds interesting.

Nvidia’s Hybrid SLI performance mode will mean that your chipset gets boosted by an external GPU in performance and that it probably shows another name in the driver so your PC will tell you have better graphics than you had before.

If you are not into performance and you care about the environment as much as Eliot and Al Gore, than you can enable power mode that will shut off the power from the discrete graphics, and of course it will mean less power consumption.
--------------------------

So silent onboard gpu for normal windows and then it kicks in your addon card when 3d is required. I'd still use a quiet 3d card setup but the low power requirements of onboard gfx make this a tempting idea.

Al Gore doesn't care about the environment, he leads a lavish power-wasting lifestyle. While I'm making power efficient gaming PCs, he uses more electricity in one month than I do in 18 months.

Back on topic, hybrid SLI is shaping up to be great. They are saying with onboard graphics, you can install a cheap $50 video card and get $100 video card performance.

Ati's Hybrid Crossfire comes in march... Its intresting to see how these hybrids compeare each others. Ati promises 40 - 70% increase when used integrated graphics of HD 2400Pro level combined to new HD 3400-series card.

Both innovations make... budget gaming intresting again.

Will the hybrid SLI work with my MSI 8600GTS and my Intel DG33BU with a driver update or will it only be on the new cards?

I believe new 34xx, 36xx will be put on the shelf before mid February to steal Chinese new year market (much like Christmas Eve to Asian people).

Hybrid SLI would only work on nVIDIA GPU & Chipset combination, and no Intel mainboards involved. At least, in near future the situation won't change at all.

this new tech sounds spot on- i'm especially interested in the new ati 700 series chips.
a wiki article is available here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_700_chipset_series

it states that
Initial desktop performance results paired with a Radeon HD 2400 video card leads to a 50% performance increase over standalone Radeon HD 2400 performance
which hopefully gives a nice boost to my incoming 2600pro :D

I thought you had to have a new video card like a new 3xxx series in conjuction with a new motherboard to get hybrid crossfire to work.
