ECS 8800GT with Accelero S1 preinstalled
Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up, newegg is selling ECS 8800GT card with Accelero S1 cooler preinstalled. I think this is a better solution than passive sparkle. Only one year warranty though...
Awesome deal newegg had going on the 7th had expired, currently $277 shipped with $50 MIR but OOS

Wonder what TIM they used? If it's a high-quality one, then this would appear to be a great combination of performance and convenience.
I was quite surprised that my evga 7900 card had what very much looked like AS5 on the stock cooler (which I of course promptly replaced with a big heat pipe cooler).

They probably used the TIM that normally comes preinstalled on the S1, which is actually very good.cmthomson wrote:Wonder what TIM they used? If it's a high-quality one, then this would appear to be a great combination of performance and convenience.

They've been around, known as PC Chips (of fake plastic cache memory chips fame) back in the day. My impression with their products has been that they're the cheapest of the cheap, and if there was a penny to be saved from using a louder fan or a cheaper rubbish piece of plastic, 100% they would. Kind of like Chinese cars. Personally I would never buy their products, but it's hard to see how they could screw up a reference 8800GT with a S1 on top. Just don't expect much on warranty I guess.PretzelB wrote:Only thing that worries me is that I've never heard of ECS before.

This is causing me so much conflict. I've been considering getting a 512 MB 8800GT and an Accelero S1 with a turbo module, so it seems like the perfect combination. It's significantly cheaper than buying the three parts separately. In fact, it costs about as much as just the card from other manufacturers. Unfortunately, I haven't had a bad experience with ECS in the past, I've had two consecutive bad experiences with ECS in the past.
Pay the extra $50 to get the parts separately and keep ECS out of the loop. You may regret it otherwise.

david, are you going to overclock it? One review that I found on the net said it couldn't overclock reliably over 700 which would be a bummer considering many cards go up to 740. Anyway if you are going overclock it, I'd like to hear the results.
BTW, $10 price drop, $267 shipped is not bad for 8800GT with S1 and the turbo module.

No I am not going to overclock it. I am sure it will be plenty fast enough as it is. I didn't order it from newegg since they charge tax to my state. I got it at:

for $254.37 plus shipping.

I just put it together yesterday and haven't put all the wire ties in yet so I haven't closed the case yet. With the case open Rivatuner reports 45 with no applications running. This is with xp/sp2 with an Abit ip35 pro, e8400, Ninja Plus Rev B and a corsair 520. I don't have the fan installed on the video card and don't plan to. I have a Nexus fan blowing out the top of my Antec 182 and no fan on the Ninja. When I get the case closed I will update with my temps.justlnluck wrote:David, how do you like the card so far? I have my case closed up now. I have one Nexus 120 mm fan at the top of my p182 and one at the back. Both are running on 6.1 volts. I can run the Crysis benchmark tool or the atitool and scan for artifacts for 30 minutes and RiviTuner reports a max temp of 58 or 59. When no applications are running the card is running at 45. With the cover open and my ear right down next to the card, I don't hear the coil noise they have talked about in previous posts. So I am very pleased with the card! The card is hooked up to two 24 inch lcd displays with a 1920x1200 resolution each for a desktop size of 3840x1200.justlnluck wrote:David, how do you like the card so far? Great news! Especially about the lack of coil whine!
My 6600GT reports 72 degrees on the desktop. It will be interesting to see if there is a difference with the 8800GT in my case. I currently only have a Seasonic running with its 120mm fan and a Zalman AlCu 7700. I will open a peripheral slot in the back and see if that makes a difference.

Really?
Don't you think the temperature of 83+ degrees Celsius was a bit out of the ordinary? I can't think of another reviewer or forum poster that has mentioned such temps.
Also, TweakTown say the card was at stock speeds while Digit-Life claimed it was overclocked. I wonder which is true.

Well, I finally got all my parts together. Surprisingly, this setup uses less wattage than the older PCs. With general usage, this one is between 70 and 80Watts on the Kill-A-Watt. This is probably thanks to the Core2Duo processor automatically underclocking to 2Ghz when not needed. Under load (3dmark06, SiS Sandrasoft benchmarks), it gets up to about 105W. My older systems with much slower video cards idle around 107-112W.
This system has no case fans. I only uses the powersupply's fans for exhaust and the Zalman 7700AlCu HSF. According to Riva Tuner, the passive ECS 8800GT is at 60C with the computer on for about 20 hours. The outside of the computer case is cold to the touch, with the exception of the back end of the PSU--that is not even luke warm...more like room temperature.

Newegg just dropped the price back to $260.

Additionally if you are newegg email subscriber you can also use EMCACAHAF coupon for another $10 off. The coupon is valid today only on 2/7/2008, so for one single day you can get the card for $206 shipped after MIR which is IMO is a very hot deal for one of the best performing cards right now with S1 and Turbo Module installed.

Yep, I ordered it today. I actually considered buying it several times before, but always backed down at the last moment because I don't play games often, however at $206 I couldn't resist and finally got it. According to the reviews, this card isn't that great of an overclocker, but as long as it hits 700/1000 I will be happy.
BTW $10 coupon will be expiring soon if it hasn't expired already, so if you're putting it off, don't.

OK, had (emphasis on HAD) my card for a week or so. Some good news and a bunch of bad ones.
First the Good Ones:
1. Idles at 51-55 celsius in passive mode with only single ~750RPM exhaust fan in P180.
2. Turbo Module is practically inaudible at 7V, at which point I have never seen it go above 60-65 degrees celsius while playing HL2/Crysis Demo.
3. Older games like RTCW:ET which I play a bit do not stress card enough to heat up. I don't even have to turn on the fan because even passive it still doesn't go over 60 degrees celcius.
Now the Bad Ones:
1. Since the heat isn't being exhausted outside the case it heats up my CPU temps. I've got C2D [email protected] (I just do not want to overclock more) and without ECS card it idled at 31-35 celsius. With the card in it idles at 41-44 celsius. Still acceptable temps for the silence I get, but definite cons. Now I'm wondering if I should have gone with GTS which exhausts air outside the case. Who knows, maybe its fan would have been quiet enough not to notice it.
2. I hear some electronic noise while playing intros/cut scenes in Crysis Demo. This is the only place I heard that noise, otherwise the card is silent. I don't play too many games though, so there may be other games where the noise occurs. While the noise was audible, it was relatively quiet and was completely masked by in-game sounds.
3. Big one. Yesterday after I finally installed full version of Crysis my card died, didn't even get to play the game, it died during the briefing cut scene on a plane. Bummer. My monitors flickered and computer shut down, upon closer inspection I smelt something burning. After spending several hour gutting out my PC and finally appreciating that little nifty power button built in into Abit IP35 Pro motherboard I determined it was the video card. There is no visible damage to it, but it is unmistakingly dead. Any attempt to boot with it fails. The PC tries to start, spins the fans for split second and then immideately shuts down. I'm going to try to exchange the card with newegg tonight, hopefully they will replace it even though it wasn't DOA.
PS if you're not scared of my failure, the card is now $201 shipped after MIR at newegg, $5 cheaper than I bought it for.
