Need replacement for 8800 GTS - 4850 or 8800 GT?

They make noise, too.

Need replacement for 8800 GTS - 4850 or 8800 GT?

Post by TBL_Leads » Wed Sep 17, 2008 9:16 pm

I need a replace for my previous card 8800GTS 320MB, that died this week.

I need something that runs as quiet and as cool as previously. I am considering a 8800 GT or a 4850. BUt i have no idea which.

My requirements are:
Under $170 (AR)
Run as cool and as quiet as previous card.
Fits in Antec Solo Case (Don't care if it takes up a HDD slot).

Can someone please point me in the right direction? I am completely lost and confused.

8800GT is same card as 9800 GT. HD 4850 is faster, quite a lot in some games and some games its slightly lower. Generally HD 4850 is 20%+ so faster than 8800 /9800 GT's but runs hot with reference cooler.

9800 GT is pretty heap and offers very good performance. Most current HD 4850's have non-reference coolers, so temperatures are hardly issue.

But if you want bang for buck, check HD 4850. Newegg has some very good offers or have been of them. I'd say 4850 for you, even nVidia cards would not dissapoint you.

Did the 8800GTS 320MB meet your performance needs? If so, then you can replace it with the 9600GT. It comes in a variety of passive and some quiet (non-NVidia cooling solution) versions and sells for about $100.

If you want/need higher performance for gaming, then maybe a bit more information would help.
- monitor resolution
- games you play, increase in fps required, etc

I'd say, get the 8800GT (renamed as 9800GT) if you want to passively cool it with an AC S1 and have a bit better performance than your old card.
Or get the HD4850 for extra performance, especially with 8xAA, and cool it with the AC S1 and a 500 rpm Slipstream fan (or undervolted Turbo module).

The 8800GTS 320MB was very good, it did struggle alittle on a few games (TF2 on highest settings), but overall I was very happy with it. I am probably looking to play other games now like COD4 so i am not sure how much more juice I would need.

So i am leaning toward the 9800 GT, but how difficult is it to replace the heatsink on the 4850 with the AC S1 and will this even fit in an Antec Solo?

AC1 is not easiest heatsink to install but if you read instructions carefully before installing and then during installation, it will take you maybe 30 mins if you install it in all quite, in peace no rushing and cleaning VRM's and rams well with artic clean or ispropyl alcohol and then keep rpessing each ram / VRM sink 30 second to 1 minute.

Its not difficult, just making it right takes bit more time than maybe Zalman's installation or some other brands. But its well worth of it.

And peoples have used many cards in Solo, only current cards that do not fit are At X2's ( 3870 x 2, HD 4870x2 ) and nVidia 8800 GTX and 9800 GX 2. Others will fit... aslong you don't have HDD's near VGA card.

You can fit any graphics card into the Antec Solo case if you cut away part of the metal in the hard drive bay. It means taking the motherboard out but only takes a few minutes to do. :)

Here's a pic of the Nvidia GTX260 in my modified Antec Solo case. The GTX260 runs surprisingly cool at only 44c idle compared to 60c+ for my old 8800GTS 640mb with the stock cooler. (My Reserator 2 failed so I ended up putting the stock 8800GTS 640mb cooler back on temporarily).

The GTX260 fan noise has a bit of an edge to it though. The plan is to get a waterblock and watercool it.:)

The ATI 4850 with Arctic Cooling S1 would probably be the best choice for a quiet card that can run games. The Arctic Cooling S1 with Scythe Slipstream 500rpm fan on my brother's Nvidia 8800GTS 512mb is a lot quieter than the stock GTX260 cooler. You might need to put some time into making sure the VRMs on the ATI 4850 card don't overheat though.

There's quite a good roundup of the current graphics cards relative performance here: :)

Will the AC S1 fit the Palit Radeon 4850? That card doesn't use a reference design and I'm afraid it won't fit.

Yes, it will (assuming you're referring to the "palit design" version of the HD4850).
