Radeon HD 4350

Post by NX3 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 2:36 am

I got a Radeon HD 4350 recently as a cheap upgrade to my pc to play the odd game. I got the PowerColor version which has a large metal 'silent' heatsink. The card has been very good and I can play the likes of Call of Duty 4 fine now on sensible settings (I didn't have to turn much down).

Anyway my PC is a Gigabyte 780g (no sideport) bios F6, 2gb Crucial TwinX 800mhz, Western Digital 320gb single platter hard drive, Pioneer DVD write, AMD Athlon 4450e, Seasonic SII 430w. At idle the desktop without the Radeon 4350 pulls about 39-40 watts (Cool'n'quite enabled).

Adding the Radeon HD 4350 increased system idle to 51-52 watts. I've been looking for idle power figures for the 4350 for a while and not been able to find anything useful other that quotes 'its low draw' etc. On my setup, nothing overclocked it pulls approx 11 to 12 watts at idle.

The only real figure I found was for the HD 4550 which the draw at idle claim was supposed to be 8 watts. This was on a older style board PCIE 1.0 board which wouldn't use as much power anyway the review said.

The 4350 was very good, no problems, it didn't seem to get very hot ever but I have no exact figures.

IMO the 4350 is a great cheap card, I thought the idle draw might be a bit lower. Given the bigger performance of the 4550 but similar idle and its only a little bit more expensive, its probably the card to go for.

Hallo NX3!
Thank you for review. I thinking about buy HD4350 or 4550.
Me interest power and consumption. I think HD 4550 will be better choice.
More power and same consumption. (+-5w).
Can you write HD4350 load consumption?
Now i have HD4670. Performance for low cost. But i don't use so much the gpu power. And for Dota is enough HD4550 :-)
Hd 4350 cost here 50$ HD4550 60$. Clear choice for me than.

If you wanna save 3 watts than go for HD 4550. But i prefer 4550 for more power.
3w are nothing :-*)

I found the link for the power consumption for the 4550. These are on a PCI-E v1 board, figures for a PC-E v2 board will be higher as my 4350 figures proved.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... html#sect0

They list the 4550 at idle 8.1 watts, peak 2d 14.1 watts, peak 3d 18.5 watts.

The figures I've seen quotes around say the 4550 uses no more than 20 watts 20-25 watts.

Sorry I sold the 4350 to a friend last week, its just taken me a while to post. I sold it as I thought I may as well get the 4550 as idle will be very similar but 3d performance will improve quite a lot. The price difference is so small I think the 4550 is the sensible choice.

"Despite the fact that Radeon HD 4350 and 4550 are usually faster than Nvidia Geforce 9500, Nvidia is still selling much better"

I think NV 9500GT is faster, but have more consumption.
My guess is 9500gt- ~35w vs ~20w 4550.

9500Gt its practically old 8600gt- (~45w).

I don't know exactly about consumption NV 9500Gt.I saw always test whole consumption system.
But i guess isn't save card.
Little power up, but with compare HD4670 isn't much saver.

NX3: I' waiting for your results with new HD4550

I've been tracking the 4650 and 4670 at Newegg, and they seem to have fallen $10-40 over the last few weeks, and there's lots of $10-$20 rebates being slapped on all the Radeon 4xxx series cards - I'd bet that's the "trickling down" that you seek (I hate rebates, personally...)

Cool, I'll keep my eye on them. I'm in the UK so we don't tend to get rebates and the prices haven't really changed since release on the 4550.
