Please help me replace my furnace.

Post by Xstatic » Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:12 am

I have an XFX Geforce 7950GT PCI-E passive which, as you may recall, is a hot little furnace. I have it plugged into a P5B deluxe and use a passive scythe as well.

I have a 120 fan rigged to the inside side of the HD enclosure, blowing at these two "passive" heat sinks, and I've blocked up the enclosure so that fresh air is pulled into the HD enclosure. (38C Case, 44C CPU, 33C HD1 so it works well enough)

Problem is the card is hot, and under the Scythe, so it cooks that, and finally, the power draw and heat serve to make the Seasonic 430 run faster so that I can hear it (gasp!) .

I have a Dell 30" & 20" in portrait connected, so require two Dual DVI. BUT I don't play games, and while this used to be my main business comp, now no 3D is required at all. So I can get rid of the fire in my case.

BUT, what do I replace it with? What type of card runs 2D with lots of real estate. Do all of the modern 2x Dual DVI cards have enough juice to do my monitors justice? Of course, I have no complaints about the speed of what I have, just the heat.

I'm considering both the GeForce 8600GT or 9600GT Silent editions. Is the 9600 overkill and going to be another sparkler? Other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

30" @ 2560 x 1600
20" @ 1200 x 1600

For work, this is a very high productivity set up - highly recommended. For play, it's just SWEET.
