They make noise, too.

New low power 9600 and 9800 cards announced by Inno3D

Post by AZBrandon » Mon May 04, 2009 9:16 am

They're claiming up to 40% lower power draw than the reference parts with even the 9800GT not requiring a PCI-e power connector. That might make it the most powerful video card that doesn't require a PCI-E power connector.

Inno3D announces E-save editions of video cards
Inno3D wrote:The Inno3D® GeForce 9 series E-Save edition is build to save energy. The power consumption can be reduced down to 40% in 3D mode and 60% in idle mode.

...

Inno3D® GeForce 9 series VS Inno3D® GeForce 9 series E-Save

* Uses G94-350/359 55nm GPU
* Enables idle mode
* Enable Phase switching with new PCB design
* Runs at 1.0V core at Ultra Low Voltage
* Removes the 6-pin power connector

With the TDP of the 55nm 9800GT being 105 watts and their claim of 40% lower draw in 3D mode, I calculate that to mean 63 watts for the 9800GT. That should be cake to cool with an S1 or similar heatsink if you wanted to go passive on the video card.

you already can passively cool regular 8800 GT / 9800 GT fine without fan on Accelero S1...

Well with these cards you should be able to do so on lower case fan speeds and with less energy usage. Good from a heat, power bill, and environmentalism standpoint.

Environmentalism... new word for marketing same old slightly tweaked. Buy this! Save the world! I hardly buy that. World would save more energy if peoples would turn off their AV system's off and not use ready state. You would save a lot more energy that way...

That and not buy new stuff! It takes a crapload of energy and resources to manufacture something like a video card... And don't get me started on hybrid cars.

But I do welcome the new 9800GT as a competitor to HD4670 for best video card that should work fine with a PicoPSU (given other low-power components).

You can just undervolt a standard card to the same 1.0V from the stock 1.1V and get a significant saving. They also may be using split 2D/3D speeds which is unfortunately missing from the reference design.

Contrary to the marketing-speak, these aren't unique to Inno3D; EVGA has one too, at Newegg:

According to VR-Zone, it's another reference design which nVidia calls the "Green Edition":

No power connector and TDP of 59W is nice, but no one mentions the idle power draw, which is the number I'd like to know. I don't like the look of that fan either and since it's two-wire it's probably not quiet.

Umm... yes, that's the 9600GT. The far more interesting Inno3D card is the 9800GT that doesn't have a power connector. AFAIK, that IS unique for now.

Oops, well I should've said it was the 9600GT.

Far more interesting is subjective; I'm far more interested in the 9600GT since it'd presumably have lower power draw and as I wouldn't be using it for games it's more than powerful enough. :oops:

Hmm, that looks shorter. I wonder how long the PCB is and if it will fit in my Asus T3.

From Feb: http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-8020- ... n-PCB.html

The 9800GT looks to have a shorter PCB length as well and may be the fastest available card in that size.

Bah, nvm, looks like the final PCB uses a different fan: http://hothardware.com/News/ZOTAC-Intro ... 800GT-Eco/
