Any suggestion for cooling a X1950 Pro

Post by Goober » Thu May 28, 2009 3:42 pm

I bought a His X1950 Pro used and it has the most annoying fan I've ever heard. Whiny fans may be annoying but they've got nothing on a clicking fan. I've done some searching and discovered that do to the VRM design these can be difficult to cool. I originally wanted to go fanless but I doubt that's going to work with this card. Does anyone have any suggestions for 3rd party cooling solutions? No 3 slot coolers though.

Accelero S1 would probably do the trick... no idea how hot the card gets and how good the airflow is in your case, but you might be able to use it passively.

I gladly confirm to You that the AC Accelero S1 Rev. 2 works wonderfully, when paired to the XT1950Pro, even without its AC Turbo Module.

I've seen your post before and it originally gave me the idea for passive cooling but after more careful reading I got the impression you only used your card for 2D work. Have you ever tried really stressing the card with that cooler?

BTW, I did search and didn't find a lot of success stories which is why I posted. I even searched on Newegg and most or all of the reviews that said they used the Accelero with this card also said they used the turbo module or an extra fan.

quest_for_silence:

Which model is your X1950? Some don't have the horrible VRM design.

----------------
I don't know if it makes a difference but I think I have the Rev 1 card because the box says 620mhz on the front and from what I could find out the Rev2 are 590.

As far as airflow is concerned I have the Antec NSK6580B with standard 120mm fan in the back set to low. I'm thinking of taping over those stupid holes in the side though which might improve airflow a bit. I could add a 92mm front fan but I'd rather not if I can help it.

EDIT: I thought of something to add. With the stock cooler the card reached about 70C running Furmark for about 15mins. I don't know if that's good or not. I do know my ambient temperature is generally pretty high. Having the computer in a small enclosed room with a 22" CRT makes for some fairly high temps.

On my old AGP rig (DFI LanParty NF2 Ultra B with a ~70w AthlonXP 3200+), I used a common Sapphire Radeon XT1950Pro AGP with an AC S1 Rev.2 (AC MX2 paste for GPU and 3M 8815 for vram heatsinks): more than a bit over 30°C at idle, around 54° C typical gaming, about 65°C as personal maximum, if I remember well. With the AC Turbo module, GPU temp was about 40°C under load (but it's not quiet).

The case was an Antec 4400 with a single 120mm Scythe SSF-E exhaust fan, an Enermax Pro82+ (with its std 120mm fan), and a Scythe Katana HS with its stock fan.

I never used the Sapphire's stock cooler.

Thanks for the responses, the Accelero is looking better and better. I just have one more question. Is it possible to remove it and use it with a different card in the future or is it pretty much stuck on there once it's on?

I was mainly concerned about the little plastic clips. I believe in your post you said they're nearly impossible to remove once on.
