They make noise, too.

Video card for two monitors and as little power as possible

Post by quicksilver » Mon Sep 28, 2009 4:16 pm

I'm wondering what video card would be a good choice for driving two monitors at 1920x1080 and using as little electricity as possible. It should also have solid Linux drivers.

Thanks for any info :-)

Linux -> NVidia

Basically all current cards support at least 2 displays. So just get something cheap if you don't have any other requirements.

Does anyone know if Nvidia gives power consumption for their cards?

OEM's will give minimum psu requirements which is an indicator, but any decent card review will measure idle/load power consumption. Avoid cards that require a supplemental power connector, the PCIe slot provides max 75 watts under load. If you go back a few generations, you'll find the 6600GT, 7600GT and 8600GT without auxillary power. I believe the 6600GT was one of the first with dual DVI output, with earlier generations having DVI + D-sub. Also lower onboard memory will require less power. The 6600 GT came in a 128MB version.
