They make noise, too.

Radeon HD 4670 vs Geforce 9600 GT Low Power

Post by johnniecache7 » Sun Dec 06, 2009 12:25 am

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone tell me which of the two consumes less power Radeon HD 4670 or Geforce 9600 GT Low Power. I'm doing some low end gaming and will runing my system on Sesonic S12-430 430 watt. The Geforce consumes 59 watts max but all that ATI says about the HD 4670 is 400 watt PSU recomend. According to the SPCR HD 4670 review the card comsumes 40 watts max. I know the 9600 GT is more powerful card but that not my concern since my games aren't demanding and the HD 4670 is cheaper. I don't want my upgrade to go poof with magic blue smoke.

You'll be fine. The reason the recommended wattage for video cards is so high is to cover themselves against all the low quality, no-name PSUs. Seasonic make quality power supplies and you will have plenty of headroom. As long as you don't do any crazy overclocking you should be fine, however the card says it's 'factory overclocked', and I'm not sure if that would use more power or not.

:) I just like double check more or less as my other system uses over kill Seasonic S12-650 650 Watt with HD 4850. I still haven't decided between the 9600 GT or HD4670.This be based this which one uses the less power and it seems like the HD4670 does. I don't think the 9600 GT will fit into my Sonata 2 with the front fan installed anyways. Oh the memory on the HD4670 is slightly overclocked 2000ghz I doubt that force more power drain as the HD4670 1600,1800,2000ghz depend on the maker.

The 4670 uses a bit less power under load, but it uses much less at idle. The 4670 adjusts its clock down at idle. I don't think the difference is significant, though.

Also take a look at the MSI N240GT which seems to be an improvement on the 9600GT low-power as far as power consumption.
Performance-wise better than 4670 but weaker than 9600GT.

You won't come close--my AMD 5050e system with Radeon 4670 peaks around 160W from the wall using a KAW for measurement.

I'd go with measured real-life results. Of course different card manufacturers and different samples will yield different results, but they won't be different on a scale that would get you into trouble.

Guess the 4670 would be a nice choice if that's sufficient for your games.

I acknowledge my videocard isn't a screamer, but I only have a 19" 1280x1024 monitor, appreciate quiet and low power, and have a wife.

I'm not getting an upgrade (to any of the above) any time soon  :D

Either of those cards offer pretty stunning performance/power draw to price ratios. Especially when you think of what they rate with from a few years ago.
