Twin Turbo Pro Installed on my 5870 :-)

Ok she's done :-) Took about an hour to clean the card and install the cooler.

1. This thing is dead silent. I set it all the way to 50% and its still almost dead quiet. I left it
at 40%.
2. Its idling now at 28C That's down from about 38-40. So a good 10C drop.
3. Load about 45C that's after playing BF2 for about 30-40 minutes. So it almost loads at what
the card used to idle at. So again that's about a 15C drop from load.

Installation was pretty simple. I put on the ram sinks and got a blow dryer and heated the tape up a bit and let it sit for about 10 minutes then installed the cooler. Everything installed fine, no problems. And all the rams sinks are included, from the memory to the vrm to the regulators. You can control the fan speed from the CCC. All in all this is one awesome cooler. And it doesn't take up too much space either...

That's awesome, well done! Cooler looks good on your card. Its good to know that cooler fits no problem. Your card is basedo n reference, right?

Yes this is a reference card....

thanks for posting feedback on the install.

does the fan speed change with the temperature?

It will if you leave Fan Control to Automatic in CCC. But if you put it on manual then it stays at whatever you put it at. Mine is at 40% and it is perfect...

Nice to hear the Pro doing well. I'm getting one for my 5850 as well, although not being able to wait (stock coolers fan had bearing issues) I slapped on an old Accelero S1 together with the stock heatplate and it's doing fine with a thin 70mm helper fan. Taking the stock batmobile cooler apart was quite a chore with a multitude of screws and some of the smallest ones being tighter than anything I've encountered before. :x

Wow I had the exact same problem on the stock cooler as well. I couldn't for the life of me unscrew those little screws. That was the hardest part of the installation was getting those screws out. I finally did, but I had to use all my strength to get them out. I ended up stripping one of them and I had to use a dremel to cut away at the hole to get it off the card.

Does it fit 5850 aswell btw? or only the 5870? should be same board right?

According to the specs it will only fit the 5870. It doesn't list the 5850 as compatible. But I'm not 100% sure on that. Send them an email and see what they say...

it's a pretty nice cooler, hey =) it came stock on my 4890 - i was going to grab any old 4890 and throw an Twin Turbo on it, but this Amaze card with the TT Pro ended up being cheaper anyway!

I use Rivatuner to underclock it all the way down to 250/200 core/memory clocks - i've got it set up to automatically go back to stock [950/1000 - factory OC] speeds whenever hardware acceleration is called for [ie, gaming] and flick back down when i'm finished. combined with fan profiles based on temp, i'm really happy with it! in some ways i just wish that my card was a reference design, so that i could undervolt at idle as well, but not to worry =)

so yeah, have a look at rivatuner - once you work out how to get it up and running [takes maybe 5mins from scratch now that i {moslty} have it sorted] it just sorts itself out in the background and lets you get on with whatever you're doing.

Edit: Unfortunately when mounting a Twin Turbo Pro on my HIS 5850 it occurred that the DVI cover was even more in the way than with my old Accelero S1. It would seem that the 5850 cards have the chip a wee bit closer to the ports than the 5870 series, though I haven't studied any pictures or cards to verify that.
Yeah the mounting points are the same. Even AC's good old S1rev2 fits with just bending aside a small portion of the corner fins near the cards DVI cover. I'll put a TTpro on my 5850 in about a week, though with an S1rev2 already on there's no rush. I've tried some new games and haven't seen a reason to overclock at all. :)

Sorry for the thread hijack, but is there any coil whine noise coming from the 5870/5850 VRMs? I had a few Radeon 4890s, and all of them whined terribly. With the stock cooler on it was hard to detect, but after putting on an aftermarket cooler the coil whine was unbearable, even when I was in a normal 2d environment...

I don't hear any coil whine on mine at all. My friend and I just installed one on his 5870 and it too is dead silent, no coil whine...

Well that cooler really looks like THE silent solution for high end gaming cards :) really nice im tempted :p

VRM temps? Are they being cooled by any type of heatsink?

There are a number of small heatsinks with thermal tape in the package, but the sizeable heat spreader from the reference 58x0 cooler can also be used with very good results. Apart from unscrewing the heat spreader plate from the plastic fan shroud it's also the easier option mounting-wise.

Thanks for the brief review, it sounds like a great heatsink! I have a quick question, with the low idle consumption of the 5870, can you turn off the fan when doing 2D stuff (browsing web, watching movies etc.) ?

Hi!

Great you had those results. Is it possible that you can provide some more info and pictures of the installation process. Furthermore, i would like to see some furmark stress tests and overclocking potential with full fan speed :D

Now the question becomes - what's better, this solution or a Vapor-X card? :)

EDIT: Nm - just ordered a 5870 and Twin Turbo Pro. Hopefully this turns out to work as well for me as for the original poster.

On a different note - I do have to wonder if it's possible to use the shroud from the 5870 cooler instead of sticking on the heatsinks that come with the TTP.

Alert on the 5850.
Unfortunately the Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro bumps into the metal DVI cover at least as much as the older Accelero S1 or even more. I ended up strapping the Twin Turbo Pro fan rig onto my S1 for the best result. Primarily because I was also unable to use the 5850 stock heat spreader plate at all together with the Twin Turbo Pro, heatpipes getting in the way. The cooler fits by bending some 9-10 fins in the corner near the DVI cover, but even then it's a close call. I'm sorry to have been overly enthusiastic before having tried the exact combination first hand.
On a different note - I do have to wonder if it's possible to use the shroud from the 5870 cooler instead of sticking on the heatsinks that come with the TTP.
If the 5870 shroud/heatplate is basically the same around the chip area as on the 5850 the unfortunately the TTP heatpipes will collide.

I was going to wait for a Sapphire 5850 Vapor-X to appear, but couldn't resist getting an other card in the end.

I always thought 5850 and 5870 reference cards had the same position of GPU, just only different clocks/specs.
5770 and 5750 have their GPUs positioned closer to the I/O end, hence even more limited cooler compatibility.
But 5850 causing such troubles? Well, well.

EDIT
Just found this pic in Xbit Labs. It says the length is also different for 58xx cards. Which might explain GPU location differences.

I downloaded some images and made a rough overlay. There is indeed a small difference in how far away the chip is positioned. Not much at all but seemingly just enough.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Arctic Cooling coming out with some kind of 5770/5850 compatible cooler given their popularity. I must say that the S1.rev2 with some fans is a kickass performer for my 5850 though.

Could someone tell where exactly I am supposed to place the heatsinks on the 5870? A picture of some sort would be perfect :)

And yes, I've never done this before. But the stock cooler is making so much noise that I can't see a way around it.

I have nothing to offer but lots of praise to whomever ends up helping me, I hope that is worth something :P

You can use the contact points on the stock cooler (the metal plate) as a guide for which chips that should have a heatsink fastened to them.
Beyond that you can stick some heatsinks on whatever chip possible as long as there's room, even if they don't really need the extra cooling. The fans will air-cool much more of the card than the stock cooler does, so what chips are not in direct contact with the stock cooler will be better off than before with the TTpro installed.

Allright, thanks for the tip mkk.

I did some research, and came up with this: hxxp://
www.
hardwareoverclock.
com/
VGA-Kuehler/Accelero_TwinTurbo-Pro-019.jpg

(spcr is being very strict about links)

Would it be okay if I did it like this (despite this being the 5850)?

by mkk
Yeah that'll be fine. The chip layout between the two models are the same.
Make sure that all four of these little chips are in contact with some sink. The 5850's have only three of them so the sink fitting may be a bit different. But there's plenty in the package.

Thanks a lot mate, thats just the info I needed. Now I just have to wait for my xfx 5870, as my powercolor 5870 turned out to be a dud.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread ^^

For me it is great you ask questions. I am awaiting my TTpro as we speak. Too much snow in Denmark for the post service to handle I'm afraid.

If u get there before me, can u take pics of the installation process? I will do the same if I get there before you. Perhaps we could both learn something.

I would like a complete walk-through guide of installing the TTpro on a 5870

Sure, I can do that. It won't arrive untill thursday though, and I want to stress test it first, just to make sure it isn't faulty. But I'll snap som photos of it when I get there.
