Would my 4870 cooler fit a 5*** series card?

They make noise, too.

Would my 4870 cooler fit a 5*** series card?

Post by gcwebbyuk » Tue Apr 06, 2010 12:35 am

I have modified my Zalman GV1000 cooler, and it is now silent. However, I am thinking about switching to a 5850 as some of the newer games I play could run a little better.

However, I dont want to stick to a stock noisy cooler, so wanted to swap my current cooler over - but would it fit?

It should fit, as the holes are positioned at same spots as HD4870 had. But there is a catch - my T-Rad2 was barely enough to cool this card, so i'm unsure how will your Zalman perform.

Btw your cooler on 5850 : http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/273257-post49.html

How much hotter are they than the 4870?

WIth my current silent mod:

I get an idle temp of 19/20c and max temp is around 40c

Idle temperatures of HD5870 with TRad2 were comparable to idle temperatures of HD4850 with TRad2, about 35-40C. Gaming temperatures are usually at 60-75C range, and Furmark is impossible to cool down. That with VRM cooling with Thermalright VRM-R4.

PS: Idle temp of 19C, in UK ? I'm sorry, but your sensors are either screwed, or you live in a room with 10-15C room temperature.

Prior to the modding of the GPU cooler and adding more fans, I was getting idle temps of 25ish. I would say ambient temp is between 18-20c.
