Fanless Video card for Windows 10?

Post by JVM » Fri May 06, 2016 9:05 am

My ECS 9600GT is eight years old and might be causing a problem in Windows 10. Are there any recommendations for a fanless video card for Windows 10?

What's your use case? 1 monitor, two or more? Any gaming or other 3D tasks or just web browsing, streaming, etc?

New low end cards have mostly gone away as the integrated gfx on CPUs increase their capabilities.

Just as a comparison,

The 9600 GT has a Passmark score of 751 and a TDP of 75W.
Nvidia GT 720 scores at 736, TDP of 19W, supports DX12, and goes for $45-70.
Nvidia GT 730 is 926, 49W TDP, DX 12, and is ~$55+.

Here's some fanless cards at Newegg.

I currently use an Asus GTX 950 Strix, which runs fanless until +/- 40% load and is pretty quiet even at full load. It also delivers some solid gaming and folding performances, waaaaay above the usual low end fanless gpus.

What exactly is the problem it's causing? Might be a driver issue perhaps instead of hardware.

The recent leap to 14nm process by Nvidia + AMD may result in some significantly better fanless cards.

Or maybe I'm just hoping for vaporware!

If you can wait it out, you may want to wait in case something impressive comes out in the next few months.

From what i read, if i remember correctly, Nvidia is 16nm and AMD will be 14nm, either way its the same point.

I'd bet it's vaporware: as seen on Intel last three-four CPU generations, more than once very small process = higher power density = higher temperatures.
GPUs are much bigger chips, so that YMMV, but personally I won't bet on "better" fanless.

AMD is supposedly aiming for lower power consumption. Maybe it's worth the wait? These generational leaps don't happen often.
