How silent/qiet is Shuttle's new SN95G5??

Post by specialman » Fri Jul 23, 2004 1:35 pm

I am on the verge of building my own silent pc system (with Athlon64), but even before this decision has been met I have been very interested in SFF systems, especially those from Shuttle. However, the tests I read didn't convince me regarding the noise levels.

Now this Athlon64-System called XPC SN95G5 comes along...with 92mm fan, silent PSU intelligent case design...

I would like to share thoughts on that system and I am extremely interested in any user reports and reviews!!!

Does anyone know whether this system supports AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology?

Thankful for every bit of information,

Specialman

i dont know anything about the system, but i do know something a little about 92mm fans

so far, there has been no 92mm fan that i have been happy with expect for the panaflo. but even that is only good at 5V and doesnt push much air.

the ascoutcia 92mm fan is pretty good, but mine always seems to spin at 1500rpm and i can still hear some noise out of it.

for some reason, the market for 92mm fans arent that great.

That sounds very good!!! I guess I am that much interested to learn more about the SN95G5's performance that I'll postpone my DIY plans for a little while...

specialman --

Just going by what you can see of the SN95G5 in their photos, it seeme likely that compared to the ST61G4 I just reviewed...

1) The cooling system is more powerful - bigger fan, bigger fins on HS/HP
2) The PSU is about the same, with dual 40mm fans, tho this one is said to be 240W and is not identified specifically as the same Silent X 250W model seen in the ST61G4
3) airflow will be better with similar intake vents on the sides but much less blocked grill on exhaust (maybe 75% open compared to under 50% for the ST61G4)

As for CnQ support, no indication.... but I would not based my buying decions on this. It's nice to have, but even without it, my A64 system runs pretty quiet and cool most of the time. The A64-3200+ is easily undervolted (mine anyway) and the ATI9100 chipset Shuttles have very good Vcore adjustments, so one would hope/expect for the same here, as this would definitely be considered an enthusiast system.

I don't know how quiet the SN95G5 will be out of the box, but I did mod an SB61G2 and got very good results using a 92mm L1A with Speedfan and the SilentX 250W PS. What I ended up with was a cooler running box with less noise too. I would bet with some minor mods, the SN95 could be a decent quiet box.

Here's a link to my mods (not all done for the sake of quiet):

http://forums.sfftech.com/messageview.c ... adid=51390

Unfortunately, I've ditched the SB61 as my main box because there's no way to quietly and effectively cool a high-end video card with the AGP slot so close to the side. (I did hack a cover to allow a fan to stick through, but that's another story. ;) ).

So, have you received the SN95G5 yet????

My biggest concern right now, is how good of a graphics card can it handle???

Anyone heard one of these?

Post by acroyear » Sat Oct 09, 2004 3:58 pm

I'm seriously considering picking one of these bad boys up very soon and am very interested in hearing feedback from someone who has had experience with this model. From what I've read on the forums at www.sfftech.com, these are pretty quiet. However, I'd really like to hear feedback from people on this board, since people's definition of quiet can vary considerably.

I'm looking for a system that's as quiet as possible, but it doesn't have to be dead silent. Any comments on how this Shuttle compares to other systems would be appreciated. I'd also be interested in hearing subjective thoughts on the noise level of this machine.

Cheers guys!

Simon

For whatever reason, the promised sample never materialized, but IMO, the PSU will be the limiting factor. You really can't get that thing much lower than ~ 30 dBA/1m under load, and they are 40mm fans. Ditto the fan on the NB chip, which can probably be replaced without something bigger and/or slower spinning.

The CPU cooling will not be a noise issue and even if it is, it's easy to make quieter. Lots of thermal headroom there.

Thanks for the reply Mike - shame you can't put one throught it's paces as it's supposedly quiet, although not as much as the Zen.

My order finger is twitching...

I acually just made the shuttle SN95G last weekend for my little bro to play EQ2

It is not too bad. Like it is quieter then Dell computers at my school.

But, it is no way near silent, i could not sleep with it on in my room. But all my friends say it is quiet enough and i am crazy.

When that's a good start I guess :)

I am going to put one of these togehter myself - I can't resist any longer :D

So I guess I'll be ordering a replacement fan to start with. What's the low down of 92mm fans? I was think of using the Panaflow L1A 92mm and putting a rheostat on it if necessary. Anyone got any alternatives?

Nexus. Wins hands down IMO. I swapped one for the stock Zalman on my CNPS7000A. The zalman was doing 1300 rpm with the fanmate on low, the Nexus does 1500 rpm at 12V. But the noise level is about the same and the Nexus cools better. I tried the Nexus on a SP97 and got very good results too. I also have a Panaflo 92 L1A that I'm contemplating giving to someone else - too much clicking even at 5V.

Wow is the nexus that good?
Where can I get one in the UK?

I have a 92 L1A already and it's very quiet at low voltage with no clicking - guess I got lucky with that one :)

except that none of those carry a 92mm nexus...

I can get:
SilenX 92mm 9 dBA Fan
SilenX 92mm 11 dBA Fan
SilenX 92mm 14 dBA Fan
AcoustiFan 92mm
ZM-F2, Ultra-Quiet 92mm Case Fan

Is there anyway to attach a 120mm fan onto the back of the shuttle, outside the case?

If the official dealers of Nexus in the UK are too stupid to carry the Nexus products, then you can order them from: http://www.silentpcshop.nl/index.php They carry all products Nexus currently sells, because they are Nexus' factory shop.

OK mine is together now :D:D:D with stock parts

I have to say that it is quiet imho - once you change the bios fan settings to ultra low. It's not silent but it is quiet. I will no doubt start modding it once I have some time/money but for the moment it is fine. I definitely could sleep with this in the room were I so inclined.

u can't change the fan on the sn95g5 so easily. well it uses the 4 pin fans, that have pulse wave modulation. i think thats how the ice system varies the fan speed. if you swap it with panaflo you lose that feature.

in my opinion, the ice system is very quiet. in my sn95g5 anyway.

it was suprisingly quiet with a passive video card. i don't think you would complain and no work is required.
