any NSK3300 + ATX PSU mods? (high-end mATx build)

Post by aztec » Thu Oct 19, 2006 7:07 pm

I'm thinking of building a mATX gaming rig with the specs below and the only thing I'm not too sure about is the PSU on the NSK3300, and what type of mod would be required to fit a standard ATX PSU.

NSK-3300
Asus P5B-VM
Corsair 620watt/Seasonic M12
E6600
320Gb Seagate
ATi 1950XT
Creative X-Fi Platinum
Plextor SATA DVD+/-RW
2GB DDR2

1x 120MM YL
2x 92mm Nexus

Possible you think? ...adn how quiet would this setup be?

last question...are there any 8-phase mATX boards?

Could be done, but would require a bit of modding and the right sized parts.

You would probably need a very short CD/DVD drive to make sure a full-sized ATX PSU would fit. It's always hard to tell from pictures. But the Plextor SATA looks like it's pretty short. I see you want a Corsair or M12 PSU. The modular cables might stick out a little bit farther which might cause problems too.

Looks like width and height should be enough room. So you could cut up the back to fit. You would probably also need to cut out a new hole for wires between the PSU/CD area as the ATX PSU will cover the current hole.

This could be an interesting mod. Let us know if you do it and how it turns out.

Yep. I really think this can be done...and cleanly at that.

the guy from that link seems to have thought this through, but unfortunately...he hasn't posted back.

You gott click on thumbnails on that post to appreciate the fact that the poster has really given this mod some good thought.

FYI, the NSK4400 is a nice case if you can live with the larger size.

The included PSU is probably not good enough for the ATI but it's running my X2 3800+ (with Zalamn 7000B-alcu) home office PC quite nicely and is very quiet except for drive seeks (using the inclded rubber grommet mounting).

The stock power supply can handle that system. It can handle 22.5A on the 12V rail. The video card can use 10A and the cpu uses 5-6A. That leaves you with 6.5 amps left over which is plenty for the motherboard and other stuff. It cannot handle Crossfire but that is not what you are doing anyways. The stock power supply is made by seasonic. Here is the article for it.

The included PSU does not have a 6-pin PCI-E power connection.

I think a 5.5" (140mm) long ATX PSU with a single rear 80mm fan is best. Reduces the amount of cutting required and gives more room for the optical drive.

I have a question regarding a mod. Not for the PSU but for the case itself: Is it possible to attach a 2.5" HD on the hard drive bay on the bottom of the case?

you can use a 5.25 to 3.5 adapter.
