Skylake NUC or Intel NUC D54250WYK2 or? ...for HTPC & madVR

Post by Schroinx » Thu Sep 24, 2015 3:35 am

I have a Mac Mini A1347 laet 2011, running win7 and EMBY Theater with MadVR. The GPU runs quite hot resulting in the fan running flat out and being quite noisy.

I am looking to replace the box with something more silent. I cannot decide if I should wait for the Skylake nuc, brix, or what all the other small pc's are called, as they may overshoot my target and still not be future proof for 4k60p due to the HDMI 1.4. So my options are to wait or get a only slightly better machine than the mac mini, that will be less noisy, but also cost less than the Skylake.

I have this on offer:

Intel NUC D54250WYK2, 2.6 Ghz, 8 GB ram, 120 GB SSD, 8gb ram

Does anyone has experience with using this for HTPC duty or similar?

All NUCs have laptop cooler+fans, and when loaded are noisy. If you want silent, get and Akasa fanless case and build a fanless NUC or get a system like:

Personally im happy with the MSI Cubi, its not silent by any means, specially loading it, running Kodi its still noticeable 1mt away, but not annoying, further than that i cant hear it at all.

Now if you are set on Nuc as your base, as Schroinx posted, there are some after market solutions, here are a couple more,

Steacom NC1 Fanless Chassis
Akasa Fanless Nuc

You gotta crosscheck that its meant for the nuc that you are planning, as not all have the same ports and holes.

Asus also has a fanless mini box coming, ASUS Announces VivoMini UN45 mini PC.

I had the i3 Haswell and Broadwell NUC. The Broadwell one is much less noisy for the typical use, and it can be made next to dead silent by setting 0% PWM rate until it reaches 70C, which under normal use (web browsing, Kodi, compiling some stuff in Eclipse etc) pretty much never does - so all you can see is some minor electrical buzz if you put your ear very close. But i guess this is an old topic, so my experiences are irrelevant :P.
