Reserator in Refrigerator?

Post by ss69camaro350 » Thu Dec 16, 2004 3:21 pm

Has anyone given any thought to this? I've always wanted to try to incorporate a water cooling system with a reffirgerator somehow to lower the temps of the coolant, but didn't really see an pratcial easy way till now, what if I just put the reserator unit in a compact fridge, and drilled hoses in the door to pass the in/out hoses too and from the unit? Anyone have any thoughts on this? I have yet to purchase a water system, so I'm loking for ideas what the best one to get would be. I too am looking for silence and fanless setup if possible.

Thanks.

Thinks about it... Fridges are noisey.

There's a couple of problems with the idea, besides the obvious one that Jordan pointed out:

1. No mini-fridge out there has a compressor designed to cool a continuous internal 100watt+ heat load. The fridge will run all the time, and the temps will still rise.

2. There's no benefit, and lots of downsides, to running a below ambient water-cooled system. (condensation, noise, electrical consumption, heat production, etc) At best you get a few more percentage in overclock, but for the price (in time, money, and noise) that's hardly worth it. If you really want to go that route, I would just take the water out of the equation, and do phase change cooling.

Or......

Just set the reserator out on your window sill. Success will vary with climate.

There is a link on the Internet showing exactly what you want... But I don't think it's pretty quiet at all!...

There's the monster:

"Extreme Water-Cooling Using Refrigeration" - Nicholas F. Singh - 1/20/02

For complete instructions on how to build that monster, look at http://www.overclockers.com/tips798/. Hope that can help you... but I really NOT want to try it myself!

Great! That way you can overclock in winter and underclock in summer!

Why not just stick those heat-exchanger coils in the back (water closet) portion of the nearest toilet (assuming you're somewhere where there's in-ground water supply)?
There's a lot of thermal mass in the several gallons in the w/c, and if it warms up, you can just flush... :)

you know that idea is not as crazy as it sounds at first.

Of course, who has a toilet in close proximity to their PC?

And the logical follow-up question: Why?

On the other hand, there are some questions you really don't want answers to....

Just plumb it into the mains water supply and run it as a total loss system...

Which is illegal in many places in the US, and rightly so.

I was thinking more along the lines of it being in the next room, but you're welcome to impute whatever you like... :)

thats all pretty ingenious. hm.

I have always thought of running a 15 foot copper pipe just bare as a radiator for the system. puttin a pipe into the water of a system would make it ice cold.

For many years, IBM mainframe computers were all water cooled, requiring expensive plumbing in computer rooms. About 10 years ago IBM mainframe water cooled computers were replaced with air cooled versions.

Now it appears that water cooled computers are making a comeback for PC's.

Strange world.

Think the toilet thing wouldnt work unless you shat a lot. Someone did that over at ocforums and IIRC he had to flush it a good deal. Basically a slower total loss system. Your toilet is cold right now but wont stay cold for long if you dont flush it for a day and your computer is heating it up.

Unless you have a leaky toilet - and that brings us back to the total loss system.

Are leaky toilets illegal?

Not so sure that's legal in all parts, no?

At first I thought they were taking the piss, until I saw that they took it from the cistern instead.

(they keep on coming )

It'll be a bummer if it don't work though.

er, would be legal everywhere toilets are, assuming you own the toilet...
that's not an open loop (though even an open loop in the context of the toilet would be ok, as long as the toilet isn't wasting water).

lol this thread is genious..
if u think about it some kind of open loop is more logical than a closed system..
anyone incorporated a stream or pond (hmm, bacteria) in their garden to their WC? lol.. even a swimming pool could work

what is the viabilty of hooking it up to a hot water tank (or the intake where cold water enters the HWT).. obviously its not ideal being its not cold all the time- but it would be far cooler than the max temp for a processor?
if u had a system whereby all the cold water entering the tank first went through the WC system then it would be cool most of the time.. theres a decent amount of hot water used in a day in an average home..
and of course it would save on your heating bill a little :)

[sorry to continue the stupid ideas  ]

"Think the toilet thing wouldnt work unless you shat a lot."

not many pscr forum entries can say they used the word "shat"

I find this thread most impressive.
